Donating his salary is a great gesture, and hopefully the money goes to some good causes.
But if he wanted to make such a gesture, why didn't he just do it without telling everyone? Why did he announce it at a press conference he knew the whole world was watching?
It helps maintain the image/myth/aura around him and the whole world has eaten it up as usual. Smart move by the 'Brand Beckham' management team.
When Craig Bellamy was playing for City, all the good work he was doing in Africa wasn't trumpeted from the rooftops. It only leaked out, a little later, almost by chance which is at a complete variance with the self glorification methods that Beckscum and the useless stick insect he has in tow, always use.
In Beckscum's case, abject mediocrity, both as a player and a person, has been elevated to a veritable art form - which, I suppose, is a type of nauseating skill in itself, albeit his only one.
