Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. Would you buy a paperback version online rather than at a bookshop?

A yes here as well mate.

I should point out that you don't need a Kindle to read this. You can download a free app for your phone or computer at Amazon.co.uk. I can't post a direct link on here (it gets blocked by the spam filters) but I've posted the link to Amazon's download page at my website
http://www.manchesterfootballhistory.com/

You'll need to register with Amazon to use the app, but that only requires an email address and password.

Also, Mancityfans is the only place I've announced the book details so far (full launch will probably be Saturday). So if you download the ebook before then you'll be more knowledgeable about City's origins than anyone else on the planet.

Just in reply to KK's post about being a confused old man.
So was I, I downloaded the EPUB version, then spent god knows how long trying to get it to work with the Amazon app.
I eventually downloaded a EPUB plugin for Firefox, works a treat, no hassle at all.

Just downloaded it onto my laptop then put it dropbox. Hopefully I can pick it up onto my Samsung tablet later. Fingers crossed.

Fascinating stuff again Gary. I am chomping at the bit but would love a paperback copy for the shelf.

I had to laugh though. From the moral height of the benevolent, rectors daughter; Anna Connell, we are now plummeted to suicides and transvestites. Considering our Chester's Brewery heritage, not a lot seems to have changed....:-)

Thanks for all your efforts.

Actually, it's Andrew. But I understand the confusion.

In the book I argue that the correct starting point for City is the creation of Gorton Association in 1884. That club was founded by its players, so in that respect our origins are similar to a club like Barcelona. The creation of St Mark's FC still plays an important role in the story, but new evidence indicates that it was created in order to keep young men involved in the Church.

The transvestite scandal isn't directly connected to the football, but may have been a factor in Arthur Connell's decision to introduce some "Muscular" Christianity into his parish.

My apologies for the mix up Andrew.

Having not yet read the book, I am absolutely fascinated by what you say. That would mean the believed 1st ever game, versus Macclesfield Baptists was of no consequence to our evolution.

That game is significant in that it is the first recorded match featuring a Manchester side made up of working men. At least three of the St Mark's players that day were founding members of Gorton Association in 1884, so it certainly plays an important part in our evolution. However, it is not City's first recorded match.

I'll be running a story next week to explain this in more detail. The story will also list the first 12 football clubs in Manchester in date order, including how they were formed and where they played.

Does that mean you'll have to change the details of your 'my first City match', John?

Gorton Association's first recorded match was on 8 November 1884, when a 2nd XI defeated Eccles (2nd XI) 4-2. Gorton's formation was announced two weeks prior to that so the first team may have played during that two week period. Unfortunately, no record of a first team game before 15 November can be found in any Manchester newspaper, or any of the newspapers I've looked at from surrounding areas. It may be that the first team had arranged earlier fixtures that were cancelled, which was fairly common in those days.

There are far too many questions floating around my head about this, I will have to be patient and read the book first.

Book Update.
A paperback version is now available to pre-order for UK customers via this link.
http://www.manchesterfootballhistory.com/

For the next three weeks I'll be selling it at the discounted price for £7.45 (full price £8.85) plus £2.50 P&P. The publication date is 6th May 2013, though I'm hoping to have them sent out before then. Unfortunately it's not feasible to offer overseas postage initially, but anyone living abroad will be able to buy the paperback from 6th May.

If anyone wants to read a sample section of the book just follow the Amazon link at Manchester Football History and click on the Look Inside feature.
