OK, Kompany will likely see out his playing career at City with his wife being local, Zabaleta enjoys living in Manchester (Cheshire, anyway) and going to his chippy, and Silva, Aguero, & Tevez (now) seem settled. But none of them would accept even as little as 20,000 a week, let alone workmen's wages. When you're on 150,000 a week you're rich for life, and then it does become about the "challenge", or perceived personal slights, or just where you are: would you rather be in Paris (with PSG) or the Northern Quarter? The days of the Tom Finneys are long gone.
African footballers maybe more mercenary because their money supports much larger families / communities than say European Players.
Certainly the Tom Finney days are long gone - catching a bus to the ground with the punters and running his plumbing business.
