2nd May MCFC film night at Cornerhouse - latest info

Postby gary james » Tue Mar 19, 2013 8:21 am

**** ADDITIONAL DATE - http://www.cornerhouse.org/film/film-ev ... -on-film-2 ****

Advance notice that on Friday 26th April at about 6pm I'll be hosting 90 minutes of MCFC footage. This material has come from the collection of the North West Film Archive and contains many rare and unseen items.

Admission details and ticket sales will be announced in late March but with the following day's game moving to a lunchtime slot I wanted to give advance notice now for anyone travelling over. If you're planning on staying over night get here before 6pm watch the film show and then enjoy the rest of your night in Manchester.

Headline details are:

The Boys in Blue: Manchester City FC on Film

Gary James, author and Manchester football historian, curates an evening of films about the history of Manchester City FC selected from footage preserved at the North West Film Archive, Manchester Metropolitan University. From the legendary Billy Meredith through to Maine Road’s final match, amazing archive material will be brought to life by Gary’s unrivalled knowledge of City’s history. Rare interviews with chairmen, managers and players combine with the sounds of the Kippax for what promises to be a great show.

The evening will include an interview with Joe Mercer on the day he resigned as boss (not shown since that day!); the sight and sounds from the Kippax Stand on its last day in 1994; Maine Road in the 1920s; colour film of the ground in the 1930s; interviews with Book, Allison, Bond and Swales; fans at the 76 homecoming; fans queueing for tickets in 1981; film of the recording of "The Boys In Blue" and much more.

The footage shown comes from a great archive and is not footage widely available on DVD, the internet or even at MCFC on match day. Rather than focus on cup final goals and memorable highlights, we're showing material that is not known or hasn't been seen for years.

Ticket sales will be announced later this week (to be available direct from Cornerhouse) but I hope this gives you all a taste of what's to come and I hope there's great interest when tickets are released.

Going to watch a 'blue movie' in a back street cinema sounds a bit seedy to me.

That almost worked. The Cornerhouse couldn't be any less 'backstreet'.

Sounds pretty ace. I'd definitely have gone bit I won't be around then. I'll make sure my brother and dad are aware of it.

Great news - over 150 tickets were sold in the first 2 days which means this is now in the bigger theatre. If you want to attend I suggest you get your tickets early as demand does appear high. Details: http://www.cornerhouse.org/film/film-ev ... fc-on-film

Thanks to all those who have already bought tickets. I hope you have a great night. Starts at 6.20 (prompt) and should be finished by about 8pm (90 minutes film/talk).

Thanks for the heads-up - just bought a couple of tickets online and very much looking forward to the event.
If we had De Gea and the rags had Hart, we'd be top with a 9 point lead and they'd be in 12th place - that's the difference between a 'good' keeper and a 'top class' keeper - 12 places - think about it.

It looks like the film night is a sell out (it's about a 280 seater venue). Thanks to all those who have ordered tickets - I look forward to seeing you. Apologies to all those who missed out. I've been amazed at how quickly this has sold out. The tickets went on sale late on Tuesday; we were upgraded to the largest theatre room on Thursday and now it's gone completely if the Cornerhouse website is correct.

Thanks.

The film show did indeed sell out on Sunday, but we are now looking at an extra showing.

It's proving problematic at the moment because of possible fixture changes and so on, but we're hoping we can get a date in early May. I'll keep everyone posted.

Incidentally, for anyone attending on the 26th April copies of "Manchester The City Years", "Manchester A Football History", and "Joe Mercer, OBE: Football With A Smile" will be available from the Cornerhouse shop on the night. I'll be happy to sign copies on the night. Might be worth getting early Father's Day pressies signed/personally dedicated.

Of course Waterstones, the City Store and the National Football Museum also have copies of those books on sale, and I'll be happy to sign any copies brought on the night wherever they've come from.

Thanks to everyone who has bought tickets for the film show. I hope you have a great night.

A second date and time has been announced. It is expected that this will be the last showing of the footage during 2013:

Tickets sold out quickly last time, so please book early if you want to attend.

I've been asked what the MCFC film night at Cornerhouse will show, so here's a few brief highlights:

The evening will include footage from 1925 of Billy Meredith's testimonial game; 1934 homecoming parade; colour film of Maine Road c.1936; edited scenes from the Mancunian Films production "Cup-tie Honeymoon"; 1956 snowy Maine Road; 1956 FAC final highlights; the Duke of Edinburgh at a Manchester derby in the 1960s; the arrival of Manchester's first Polish star Kaziu Deyna in the 1970s; an interview with Joe Mercer on the day he resigned at Maine Rd; City's 1976 League Cup homecoming parade; BBC news reports and interviews featuring Peter Swales, Malcolm Allison, Tony Book and John Bond; supporters queueing for FAC final tickets in 1981; the last day of terracing at Maine Road filmed from the Kippax terracing; the last day at Maine Road and much more. The evening starts with a film showing Manchester's leisure venues in the post war period.

Also, here's a sneak preview of one of the films. This is fans queueing in 1981 for FAC replay tickets: http://vimeo.com/64624400
