Didn't spend anything during the summer

Postby Cocacolajojo1 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 4:31 pm

During the discussions about this seasons, it seems to me that the argument "we didn't spend any money this summer because of the FFP" keeps coming up. I have a hard time accepting that statement and I've now went ahead and looked on Transfermarkt.de for the combined value of our transfers this summer.

Here goes:
Richard Wright: 0
Nasty: 15,2 million Euros plus Savic
Garcia: 20,2 million Euros
Sinclair: 7,8 million Euros
Maicon: 3,75 million Euros
Rodwell: 15 million euros
Total Sum: around 62 million Euros in transfer costs

Departing:
Nigel: 3,5 million Euros
Adam Johnsson: 12,6 milllion Euros
Adebayor: 6,5 million Euros
Weiss: 1,8 million Euros
Totao sum: 24,4 Euros in transfer income.

Netspend: around 38 million Euros. And that's not even counting the losses in salaries, which I'm sure increased if you're looking on the stateure of the players coming in compared to those going out, of which only Adebayor was probably on any larger wages.

Now this is not a high sum of transfer money we spent in total but it isn't low either. It seems to me that the argument that we didn't spend anything last summer because of FFP is somewhat flawed, as we spent a lot of money on transfer fees and wages and probably made our wage bill even heavier. Now we didn't strengthen our squad that much but it wasn't for lack of trying or resources.

Am I missing something or is it indeed wrong to say we've spent little or or no money in the last summer transfer window?

I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

I'm sure Sinclair is on considerably less than Johnson was, and I think Garcia is on a ridiculously low wage, something like £35K.

Not sure how much de Jong was on, and didn't we release a few players which will further have reduced our wage bill?

I think we spent enough to make our squad capable of more or less what it has done. This year, besides a few freaky results we have more or less achieved I think what we were supposed to. I think we spent enough to fit in both with the FFP and spend as much as we could.
IMO there was no way the Sheikh did not know how much he could authorize.

Not in the summer (though the rumour is we had an offer for him) - but we sold Mario which brings in a reasonable amount, plus saves a fairly large amount of wages too. We would be daft not to promote/buy a replacement this summer though (before taking into account any other changes to players)

We've had a net spend of less than £10 million in the last three transfer windows combined.

For the year add on Balotelli with his wages as well as the fact that we will get a fucking load more than 3.5 for DeJong over time.

So we spent about 20/25 mill over 12 months.

I suppose 38 million at any other time would be considered a lot

it's not that we didn't spend - but that we didn't spend/offer enough to our top targets i.e. hazard and rvp

We release a lot of players every year but they are mostly development squad or youth players. If you look at the link you'll see there's nothing spectacular. Next summer will be fantastic though as we're getting rid of a lot of deadwood that's (presumably) costing us a lot of money without taking up a place in our squad.

Garcia will probably not be on such a low wage and you might be right that Sinclair is on considerably lower wages than johnson, which is probably one explanation why Mancini can afford not to play him, but on the other hand I don't think Johnson had super wages before he left us.

Add to that the new contracts of Mancini, Kompany and Silva, the wage bill with all probability increased after the summer transfer window.

That's besides the point which is about the fact that it keeps coming back that we didn't spend much this summer. To answer your post though, if you are making point of transfer activity then you probably should look at seasons and not individual transfer windows. The reason we didn't spend anything during the winter transfer window in 2012 probably had something to do with our purchases in the summer window of 2011 ;)

Which is a good point but also beside the point of this thread. We spent a lot of money and commited a chunk of our budget (why does football have to be about accounting these days?) to players that have contracts that stretch for 3-5 years. Maicon was on two years though if I remember correctly. But as I said in the first post, we didn't get the players we wanted but it wasn't for lack of trying.

Exactly. The only reason we percieve that number as small is because it's dwarfed by the enormous expenses in the preceeding summer windows. And it wasn't really spent on players that makes anyone go crazy with excitment, although I can't say what happened to the female heterosexual and male gay city supporters.
