Fifa president Sepp Blatter has revealed that he telephoned France captain Thierry Henry to offer him support over his controversial handball in the World Cup play-off win over Ireland.

"I called Thierry, because he tried to get in touch with me," Blatter told French newspaper L'Equipe.
"He was honest by admitting that he did use his hand, but it wasn't his responsibility to tell the referee.

"When I was a centre forward in my junior team, I definitely gained an advantage by pulling a defender's jersey in order to score a goal. And I didn't go and see the referee to tell him about it."
The Fifa president had previously refused to comment on the incident, prompting criticism from Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief executive John Delaney.

Blatter added: "In the specific case of the Henry handball, the referee (Martin Hansson) should have taken the time to reflect rather than immediately awarding the goal."

Best book on the subject, Foul - check this out

Have a read of the first chapter http://www.transparencyinsport.org/foul_chapter_one.pdf

and buy here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Foul-Secret-Bri ... 0007208693

This book gives first hand stories of the likes of havelange, the dassler family and how they started to manipulate the olympics then moved on to the world cup. are implicated, moving on to in modern times Sepp Blatter's rise to power, his contradictions and blatent fraud, and of course Jack Warner. It tells nicely how all these things fit together.

It is one of the best reads I have ever had, and left me feeling football really has little hope of fair play in the future.

The problem isn't just at the top. It's a cancer that has spread all over and will be almost impossible to remove without damaging the game.

There are so many cronies around now that he doesn't even really have to bother pretending. People just accept this is the game and think they have to accept it.

I haven't read that yet, but will be sure to take a look at some stage.
People have lost so much faith in Blatter and co because their decision making seems so arbitrary. I was having a read of this World Cup blog on England's prospects and it makes a pretty compelling case for why FIFA's decision to change the seedings was unfair. And on the French, of all people! Thinking about it, tournament form has to be considered when you rank teams from one World Cup to the next - I imagine most sides have at least half the same players starting, so if they have a winning or losing mentality in tournaments, this can't be assessed from group matches. But these seeding decisions have made many people suspicious of their motives. There must have been a precedent in the past, I don't know why it's been changed this time in the heat of the moment. Transparency in decision making is critical, without it we all lose a bit of faith.
