How would it not be his fault? He turned up, £3.5m (for fuck's sake) - he'd once met Diego Forlan so the fee was understandable - fired up, raring to go, no doubt excited to meet Jon Macken, trained like a pro, engaged with the squad and the coaching staff, busted a bollock, and then didn't get a start... No chance. Shit, lazy, thief of a player.

£8.5m (loads in 2002 - absolutely loads) for that pair of wobblers.

de Jong was a leader, a rock, an enforcer, glue in the dressing room, trusted, reliable and a champion. The sort of player who makes others feel and play better just by being there. He knew how important he was, on and off the field, and he asked to be paid accordingly. The management dropped a bollock. Garcia is rhubarb of the highest order - a fucking traffic cone with a quiff.

I don't think you understood.

How is it Jon Macken's fault that WE paid that much for him? He had the chance to go to his boyhood club and he took it.

How do you know Vuoso was lazy? NO ONE SAW HIM PLAY!!!!

You rate de Jong a lot higher than me then. I'll choose to remember him not tracking back against Napoli allowing them to score or jumping out of the way of Wellbeck in the Cup allowing him to score. Real hero!

^^ yep, gotta agree on de Jong

He was effective at what he did, but it was what he was incapable of doing which made him the player I struggled to take to in the city squad.

I don't think there have been any more one dimensional players than him ever to win the premier league

I was thinking same. I don't think any of Garcia, Macken or even Nasri can be classed as crowd favourites.

Shaun Goater wasn't particularly brilliant but he is woven into our history now. He inspired my favourite heckle though. In his first full season (when he was almost universally hated) we were battling against Lincoln I think and a voice laced with despair and frustration from TBBM exclaimed, "Goater, you jump like a . . . . House plant!"

Holds joint records for most own goals and most red cards and was one of the first out the door when the money arrived. The fact that he won player of the year 4 years running shows how shit we were at the time.........imo.

I could never stand Niall Quinn.

I hate big, slow, lumbering, clod-hopping carthorse centre-forwards and, to me, Niall Quinn seemed to be the epitome of that ilk.

The thought of him still makes me shudder to this day.

Admittedly I deviated from the OP's question, but why does it have to be Macken's fault that we (thanks for the emphasis) paid too much for him in order for me to have a problem with it/him as a player?

I'm sure he's a nice chap but, adopting your logic for a moment (assumng I'm capable of understanding), if we paid £5million for you and you were fucking shit - as no doubt you accept you would be - would I be barred from describing you as something of a "bete noire" (wobbler, hopeless wanker etc.) simply because "you had the chance to go to your boyhood club and took it"?

Vuoso isn't even worth discussing. If you sign someone for £4.5m (or whatever) and don't play him at all, then he's self evidently wank or a prick, probably both.

You may choose to remember whatever you want. You'd be wrong to forget his calm carry and forward pass into Balotelli's feet though.

I've obviously not made myself clear on de Jong - one dimensional or not, he was a big part of the squad, a leader and someone the others trusted. Zero coincidence that Vinnie has struggled at times this season without his "brother in arms" imo.

By who? The press hate him. Most other teams fans hate him? I think quite a lot of City fans don't particularly like him. So who is he overrated by?

The quite a lot of city fans who thinks the sun shines out of his arse for winning a couple of trophies, and are blind to any faults. The thousands who sing his name week in week out. Thats a start yeah?

City fans cheering their manager on shocker!!!! Have we never sang a song week in week out for a shite player we've had? It's called supporting your team. That's nothing to do with if they overrate Mancini or not.

If Mancini wins the FA Cup this year then that's three trophies in three years. I'm sure people are within their right to claim he's done OK.

Go and read back over what I wrote when you're sober. Because suggesting he's overrated by the City fans who 'sing his name week in week out' is ridiculous.

By the people I know.

I don't know if the press 'hate' him; certainly not the press I read.

The two City fans who I talk football with both rate him fairly highly.

I perhaps however used the wrong term. He's my bete noire more I suppose because of my personal views of him, as opposed to others' opinions.

I'd swap every player you have in your first eleven for West Ham's equivalent, if the only objective was for the team to be more successful. Whether I'd have Mancini over Allardyce is moot, but its hardly the point. Do you think that, if he were in our dugout, we'd be doing better than 10th with a team that came up through the play-offs, comprising in the main of loans, release-clause deals and short-term contracts?

I just don't warm to the bloke. And think he can only take you lot so far.

You can say that about any manager at any club though, can't you? Or perhaps the Masticator will have you pushing on into the Champions League places?

walmai wrote:I just don't warm to the bloke.

I think we are a bit nearer here, aren't we? A personal dislike is fair enough, given this is the bete noire thread.
