3rd place play-off

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

3rd place play-off

Postby Chinners » Wed May 15, 2013 10:52 am

Chelsea & Arsenal could play off for third in the Premier League

The Premier League has confirmed there will be a third-place play-off match between Chelsea and Arsenal if the pair end the season with identical records.

If Chelsea draw 0-0 on the final day of the season and Arsenal win 2-1, they will be level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

The play-off winner would automatically reach the Champions League group stage.
Possible permutations

Any of following score combinations would ensure Chelsea and Arsenal finish the Premier League season with identical records:

Chelsea draw 0-0; Arsenal win 2-1
Chelsea draw 1-1; Arsenal win 3-2
Chelsea draw 2-2; Arsenal win 4-3
Chelsea draw 3-3; Arsenal win 5-4

"It would be played at a neutral ground on a date and venue to be determined," added a Premier League spokesman.

That would be funny. If it happened would they have to cancel their USA tour?

Depressing thought - don't they do something similar in the Netherlands?

As much as that concept is funny............

The reality is they would have until 9th August to play the game as that is when the CL knockout qualifier is drawn.

Split the games over a weekend so all the hotels and boozers do a roaring trade.

Thinking about it, it's the Premier League - they have no stake in Wembley. If they want to promote the PL on a neutral stage, why not hold the match in Kuala Lumpur or similar? Perfect for the 'brand' and who cares about the fans anyway. Plus, as it's not part of the original deal, I assume Sky wont have the automatic rights.

Wait are Spurs still have a chance of CL ?
You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

you guys have no fucking clue how amazing it would be to do an NFL style playoff system to win "the super bowl" of the Prem instead of this "winning the league" bollox.....

seeding the top 8 teams and doing a double legged playoff until the final would generate some fucking amazing matches and awesome revenue. New kits for the playoffs? Check. all matches at night? check. Trim down the league to 34 matches and do a playoff for the "winner" and you'd have something really really exciting.

Fancy playing Everton or Spurs right now? It would be amazing fun.

Criminal or sacrilege to some i'm sure, but i'm just telling you how the American in me feels....it'll happen eventually to pull you cunts out of the middle ages, so just don't cry like bitches when it does.

cheers

NFL style play offs ? I'd rather chew my own leg off then potentially lose a play off final to spurs

the English have plenty of play-off experience

In rugby union, Wasps won 4 championships without ending the season at the top of the table
Gloucester on the other hand topped the table 4 times but only won the pot once
It's "just not fair" and contrary to the deeply held view that the best team is the one that finishes top after 38 games

that's why we have cup competitions

Play it in Singapore and trial it as a 39th match that Scudamore or some FA big wig wanted to trial.

i always hate how right you are.

Fuck the cups. Have some playoffs. Arsenal will push for it eventually.

Joking aside....you guys will "have" to embrace a playoff story in the Prem for CL placement and "winning" the league at some point. It's the only way that a mid-table club will ever NOT get shit and shoved in it. Esp. with FFP fucking shit up.
