Gareth Barry

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Gareth Barry is a good footballer. I can see why people don't think he is, but anyone that knows anything about football appreciates that Barry is a good footballer.

You don't gain a regular place in a city side full of world class players, managed by a top Italian coach and an England team also managed by a top Italian coach by being a bad player. When I think of my first City 11...Barry is in it. When city play well, he invariably plays well and is the one keeping the midfield ticking over. He has his faults, which player doesn't, but he is very good at what he does, and that is primarily to screen that back four.

I actually thought he was the best of a bad bunch in the cup final.....that pass that led to Zabba's sending off aside, his passing was spot on. Some of his long range passing was excellent.

I like him, and think he is one of those players that splits opinion....obviously, having read this thread.

Barry might have been decent at one point but he's not fast enough anymore. I'd keep him around though. It's a long season.

I agree. He is good at the defensive midfielder role. However, he is too slow and his passing has gone to shit. Sure, the misplaced pass in the FA cup final is fresh in our minds but misplaces passes all too frequently.

I would keep him around to deputize whoever partners Yaya in midfield. I wouldnt mind Barry coming on as a sub, playing in the FA cup, or whatever else a sub does when not starting most games in the League.

On Yaya; I would hope who ever comes in doesn't run him in to the ground like Mancini did. Yaya literally played EVERY match he was available for. I personally think that's why he ran out of steam as he's not the fittest anyway. I think Mancini was scared to drop him sometimes.

Most people seem to know he is a pretty decent player, however we have plenty that do his job as well as him when he is not playing and,the notion that he is world class and irr.eplacable is a joke

For me there is little argument that he has been one of our better players but from when this thread started and the majority of this season he has not been good enough for the level we want to be at.I think if Jack or James were told to do the job Gareth has been doing they would do it just as well. For me, since mainly the own goal, but also a few games before,Gareth has been on a downward spirral. For me he should be used sparringly from now on against weaker opposition.

He doesn't need pace. He reads the game exceptionally well and has great anticipation which in my opinion is more important than pace.

He's always a player we miss when he's not here, he has a calming influence.
He's coming to the end of his career and will ultimately need to be replaced but he's still good enough for at least one more season in my opinion,

A lot of players have fallen well below standards this season.

Gareth Barry (bar the Southampton away debacle) is not one of them.

An absolutely vital part of Mancini's City side, whether he remains an integral part of Pellegrini's side is unclear but I wouldn't bet against it and he certainly deserves the chance to show what he can do.

Worth every penny we paid for him, amazed that some people would question him.

It's about balance.

Bob wanted Martinez. He is slower than Barry. When he played midfield for Bilbao against teams with pace & he had to cover ground, he was fucking shocking; like a 50 year old version of Yaya chasing back. When Bayern held a tight midfield shape, with lots of runners around him, he was able to pick the ball off people who were channelled into his zone & do an effective job.

If Bayern play an open game v Dortmund, he will look like a slug on stilts. But they won't. It's about balance, & in the right team Barry is as good as anybody in that role. Leave him to cover a lot of ground v fast players & he is fucked, as is Martinez, Garcia, Alonso, etc etc etc.

I think people know how I feel about Bazza.

Hopefully he'll be slowly making his way out of the club. I'd like it it to be faster, but, y'know.

barry is basically a flat tire.

he puts a shift in, he covers the back and does some good defensive work. but when we have possession, he slows everything down. with yaya doing whatever he does, and garcia being purely defensive. we need another midfielder that can put a killer pass through the mid or assist going forward. barry unfortunately doesn't do shit going forward. and like others have said, loses the ball alot too

if he does have the ball, he will pass the ball back and sidewards alot, like that other shite player, carrick. overall though we are missing a xavi like player in central mid, and barry is taking that place up. in games where he hasn't played, i've seen alot more speed.
Still here.

I have no qualms about his ability to guard our back 4 or win the ball.

I have an issue with his shitty passing (and this isnt just because of the FA final).
