Jim Cassell Gone.

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Jim Cassell Gone.

Postby trueblue64 » Wed Jun 26, 2013 2:31 pm

Former Academy boss Jim Cassell has left Manchester City after a club restructure and takes with him the Club’s thanks and a host of great memories.

Chief amongst Jim’s achievements will always be the FA Youth Cup success in 2008, when Chelsea were vanquished in the final, and the production line of first team players that came out of Platt Lane at a time when self-sufficiency in the transfer market was the only option.

Familiar Premier League and international stars Shaun Wright-Phillips, Daniel Sturridge, Stephen Ireland, Micah Richards, Joey Barton and Nedum Onuoha all came through a hot-house overseen by Jim and many more are still currently plying their trade through the divisions.

Having had his own career, which started and ended at Bury, cut abruptly short by injury, Cassell turned to scouting and coaching before joining City from Oldham where he hooked up with long-time friends Joe Royle and Willie Donachie who were charged with reviving the first team’s failing fortunes.

All three men worked closely on the Blues revival from shared accommodation at a cramped Platt Lane where ‘planning and preparation’ became Cassell’s mantra.

Having served in a managerial capacity in local Government whilst out of football, Cassell always maintained a healthy perspective and level-headedness where football is concerned and related easily to his young charges.

After a re-organisation of the Blues Academy in 2009 Jim became an integral part of the international department that spread City’s football and coaching philosophy far and wide.

He also became a football evangelist guest speaking at soccer seminars on all continents.

Now it is time for another change of direction for Jim who will be accompanied by the sincere thanks and best wishes of everyone at the Club.

Surely his experience would be handy for the new academy, or what ever they call it now, along with PV.

Card were marked though when they shipped him out to the desert.

Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Fuck sake.

This lad has more leaving threads than Socrates and Andy Davies combined.

And everytime he's leaving the same folk cry.

Not sure how accurate it was, but I heard he was reluctant to change the way the kids played which led to his 'sideways promotion' all those years ago.

I couldn't say if that's true or not, but I don't think it was necessarily a bad move to replace Cassell.

He did an excellent job throughout his time with us, and our academy produced lots of players who had careers in professional football, which aided us significantly throughout the 90s and 00s by giving us players for our squad and allowing us to make money by selling these players.

The reality is though, the only players we produced who were good enough for a top 4 side were Micah and (perhaps) SWP, so the standards we set for academy players now is much higher.

It's too early to say whether the coaches we currently have in place will improve the quality of players our academy produces, but it definitely won't be any worse than before, especially with our facilities and scouting network.

Something about us producing as many first team academy graduates as we did under Cassell.

A sad day, he took us through some of the darker days of our history whilst making a contribution without which, who knows what would have happened.

Thank you Jim

Ah ffs give them a chance!

Actually, maybe it's time I called out everyone who ridiculed me for saying we would win the league within five years of the takeover?!

I'd love to find that thread...

Ah, I'm starting to remember it as well. We were pretty much promised unpresented flood of top youngsters when Cassell was swept aside.

Anyways, old news now. Thank you for keeping our club afloat and respectable during some dark times.
