Hmm I'm not convinced that Boyata has the quality for him to be worthwhile keeping hold of, he was found seriously wanting when on loan at Notlob, could be another Nedum. As for his physicality I remember Mike Sheron beefing up one season and then had his worse season at City.

Isn't that where a lot of our academy products have ended up?

Boyata didn't need to beef up, he is a big lad, he was bouncing Drogba round the Etihad 3 seasons ago.

He was absolutely shocking at Bolton & looked like he had lost it completely, physically & mentally, but right at the end of last season, he looked more like the player he was two years ago, a very promising cb. He played 8 games for Twente before he came back to City & it's possible it gave him back his mojo.

If people had seen him playing in the friendly game for the first time, rather than having preconceptions about him due to his previous, they would be raving about him. And that's coming from someone who has publically written him off more than once on here.

He was horrible at Twente, though. I don't think his spell there did any good for his confidence.

maybe they are going to call him Fred! Hard to make players out through the curtain today but I think it was him being called Fred when he scored.

I like the idea of "de". "deinho".

I am convinced. He needs games and confidence.

Apparently he said in a tweet that he is leaving City. (It's in Bluemoon's transfer forum as well.) His twitter account does make him look like a moaner, tbh.

Saw a bit of the suicide programme last night and Carlisle mentioned that only 1% of academy players turn professional. I suppose in some academies and in some years that could be bettered, but even if you managed 5% in a freak year, it's still a tiny amount of the players you see at that age that will actually make it.

I guess the numbers improve dramatically once you start picking them at 16 or so from foreign academies, but it's still a big gamble. If you then look at what percentage of professional players are good enough to play for a top of the league side...

Some academies will be more successful than others though, some will have bigger pulling power to get the kids with better prospects.

Agree, but they will also get rid of a lot of players who could play lower league as they'll know they're not good enough for them - why train someone for another 2 or 3 years if you know they'll never be better than League 2 and you're a premier league club? They may get picked up again, but a lot of kids will just give up.

Not a glowing report on the work of the academy system, really.

Key point I was making though is that we can expect to see very few truly home grown kids. Most will be the ones we take from European clubs before they can sign them
