I happen to think Bale would say no, but a bidding war would be fun..

I've heard whispers for quite a while that we have been on the case with Bale & I believe it. There is history with Bale (Hughes almost signed him) & when the connections are made, the dialogue tends to keep going over time, as with Jovetic.

The problem is that Real Madrid are blatantly keen. If we were to blow them out of the water by offering Levy stupid money, I recon Bale would sign for us rather than do a Van Persie & insist on one club, but that would then play straight into the hands of Platini & Gill & allow them to make an example of us. PSG & Monaco are doing our job for us as it stands, & I'm sure we love it.

The rumours are long standing, A little bit of devilment in our actions I think could be excused, I also happen to think the ranks will close from the GFU 18 as 1 clubs get its collar felt others will be ready to jump in, maybe naive, but we wall need each other when it comes to CL. Bale would be another body blow to the scum, who are in a wierd place at the moment with Jose bullying them and Waynetta stropping, rags I know are thinking this could be the start of the end if they are not careful. Moyes is a worry for them..

I actually think Moyes 'out managed' Mancini on both occasions last season & did it fair & square, playing proper football & tactically sound. But I also think Ferguson gets about 50% more out of the rags' squad than it merits plus 50% more out of referees.

Even if Moyes is upto the job, a bad start & a build up of negative pressure could really cause an implosion at the rags. And they have of course let everyone know that Moyes will be backed, 'as Ferguson was' when rags' fans wanted him sacking.

They need a boost in this transfer window but it feels as if they are reluctant to spend without first forcing Rooney to request a transfer.

something has to give or they will be in awful shape.

(Guess who predicted last season that Utd would try to dump Rooney this season, to pay for Van Persie ? Smug, am I)

What price Ferguson returning from the dead to bail them out in a year or so ?

Rags have bid £60m for Bale (all over talkshite this morning) so lets assume for a min that they too get him ...

Arsenal are not going to get anyone but who knows Suarez or Higuan, one of em might end up there ...

How will we look then? Would we wish we had gone and gotten that one big superstar (Cavani) instead of 4-5 of what we've got?

Surely Rooney at Chelsea and Bale at the scum will strengthen them and spur them on ...

Only hope is none of these go through but whoever of these three get their main target will be our direct competition in the league this season ...

I personally am not a big fan of 5 signings, all promising but none that makes a real statement ... we bought 5 last year, remember? And also thought they had improved the depth and areas that needed strengthening in our squad ...

We all could see we needed more creativity, pace and width but didn't address these problem. Sinclair was the only nod towards it. This summer it appears we have tackled that area. The proof will be in the pudding I suppose.

I really despair at thew idea we have to keep 'making a statement' rather than building a football team.

And the signings last year would have improved the depth of the Squad, if Garcia had got upto speed in the Prem & Rodwell had been fit.

The glaring holes in this argument about making statements & blowing trillions on one player are:

1) If you sign Cavani, but you also need pace in midfield, a winger, another creative attacker, & some more cover in defence you end up with Cavani & at best one of the other positions filled. You lose out in 3 or 4 areas just to 'make a statement' in one.

2) What if Cavani doesn't take to the Premier League & plays like he did in most games for Uruguay ? So now you have still not filled 3 or 4 areas but also lack a striker as well & you have a huge, miserable, wage drain sat on the bench.

3) What if Cavani gets injured ? You are short in four or five positions.

4) How many more goals can you guarantee that Cavani will score compared to Negredo ? 10 ? 5 ? 0 ? What if it's 0 ? We lose out in 3 or 4 positions for a guy who scores the same number of goals.

I could list another God knows how many reasons.

There are two stars Messi & Ronaldo. Bale is being packaged as a 3rd & would revolutionise our team IF HE STAYED FIT & if Levy would sell him to us. Ibrahimovic & Rooney are proven but there are obvious, solid, reasons for us not signing either.

The rest, are much of a muchness. Isco is not a big upgrade on Jovetic (not currently as good imo) & Cavani is not a big upgrade on Negredo. It's pot luck; either player could succeed or fail in the Prem.

We have signed (hopefully) the best available players in just about every position we have aimed at. We will be seriously unlucky or very badly managed, if that doesn't show, in the attacking play at least, next season.

If we have a solid squad with few weaknesses, promising kids coming through & a realistic wage bill, then a year or two from now, when the World Star becomes available, we can bid the lot on one player because we are covered everywhere else.

We won't get him, but we can bid.

Wonderful post. I agree completely.

Big claim from the Independent

Manchester City appeared to be continuing their ambitious summer acquisition programme last night, with Benfica's Argentinian right winger Eduardo Salvio the subject of a €30m (£25.8) bid from the club, according to several respected sources in Portugal.

City have not yet responded to inquiries about the bid but Benfica are already understood to have begun the task of replacing the 23-year-old. The Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira Ferreira is understood to be asking €40m (£34.4m) though a compromise would appear likely.

City, who this week secured the signature of Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla for around £16m, with £4m add-ons, are also close to securing Stevan Jovetic for £22.4m plus add-ons.

Salvio is a similar player to Jesús Navas, the winger, who completed a £17m move, rising to £21.5m in add-ons, from Sevilla to City last month. A pure right winger, he is known for mixing defensive duties with an ability to score 15 goals a season. He played every game last season for Benfica.

New manager Manuel Pellegrini left City’s South African training camp to spend a few days back home in Chile yesterday. The 59-year-old unexpectedly took a flight out of Durban early this morning, with a personal issue to attend to in Santiago. It meant assistant boss Brian Kidd will be in charge when City took on Amazulu in Durban last night.

Salvio is quick as fook, a very solid player but not £25 million however.

As much as like signings we really need to sell before we buy again now. Feel the midfield is a bit top heavy.

For me we need to shift;

Sinclair
Razak
Barry
Lescott (If we sign a new CB or convert Javi Garcia to CB)
Nasri (Only if the offer is right and we bring in Salvio, otherwise keep)
Rodwell (Possibly loan him out)

If we do something with the above, Salvio could fit.

Rodwell? If he stays fit he won't be displaced from the starting 11 (if he gets in there to begin with).
