I'm sure we are on the case re a new centre half so not worried if spurs get him. They will be in contention this season tho...have done v good business IMO and AvB is looking increasingly like the manager Chelsea hoped they were getting

This is the position than can 'make' the club imo.

It's not likely to happen this season, but imo the kind of players we have been linked with over the last few seasons, the players signed & even the kids talked about as being the solution; they're not & never will be. Not the solution I envisage anyhow.

The general idea which has crept into football these days seems to be that if a defender can make a few passes, control the ball, win an occasional header & make an occasional interception, without getting skinned too many times or missing too many crucial headers/tackles per season he's all that's needed.

That has come about from some of the top teams not having great defenders. If Barca etc have players who are basically more like midfielders, playing in defence, then everyone else should aim to do the same. But how many times per season does Piquet actually do anything with the ball which is so important ?

I think it's bollocks & Barca would be even better & win the Champions League every year if they had modern day versions of 25 year old Jaap Stam & Keith Curle playing there, just defending & giving the ball simply to better footballers.

Just get the midfield to drop back & take the fucking ball off them instead of expecting them to create stuff; Barca's mids do that 95% of the time anyway, just make it 100% & sacrifice the twice weekly surges upfront or clever pass by Piquet, which usually look nice but amount to absolutely fuck all, for someone who wins headers at corner kicks, tackles like fuck & can do 100 metres in 10 seconds.

Sure, you can't have a donkey there who lumps the ball forward every ten seconds or gives the ball away all the time, but imo (& this was said last season by Martin Keown) 'the art of defending is disappearing'.

Whatever Nastasic becomes in the future, he isn't going to gain 3 yards of pace or an ability to jump like Micah Richards. IF he ends up playing for City in the future, the bloke who we sign for his alternative or partner should be fast as fuck & dominate everything in the air while Nasti picks upthe loose balls. I'd actually prefer two players like that, competing with Vinny for places & Nastasic 4th cb.

Lescott won't be around much longer & we need to plan for that & have a viable alternative to VK.

If we go looking for Savic/Nastasic type defenders who don't dominate but 'can play a bit', then those are the kind we will end up with. If we actually look for big, fast, brick wall, genuine defenders, then we may just find one who can actually play a bit too.

This is my info, he signed with them, but the clubs didn”t reach and agreement. The player had a precontract with them, however, Spurs demanded him the next day, while Steaua wanted him after the final playoff game in the Champions League.

They played in the playoffs wednesday, however, hours before the game, he supposed got an injury and could not play. So, now on normal basis, he will play with Legia Warsaw tuesday and wednesday will be in London for the medical.

Maureen wanted him because he is friend with the agent, that is true also.

I am sceptical about my fellow country players, because 90 % of them are a bunch of spastics fucks with absolutelly no mind, however, this fella is fucking good, both on and off the pitch.

He is compared with the first player in the world that won the Champions Cup with two different clubs, Steaua and Red Star, Belodedici. He was called ”the deer”, because of his long legs and elegant way of defending. This guy with the right training will be a star. He is at least as good as Nasty and all of his training, all of his growing as a youth, was modeled by Benfica.

I dont think it is as black and white as you put it there Ted but I take your point entirely. VK was a Mid and is now a decent defender. looking for more Vinnies would be ok imo.

The loss of proper defenders isn't just everyone trying to copy Barca. It is simply that if your two CB have to get rid of the ball asap then in a pressing game the oppo can just ignore they exist - ie. be playing against 8 men.
In the modern game the CB needs to be a little comfortable on the ball. It stretches the pitch for the oppo and it means they have a full 10 outfield players to have to try to cover.

All that said, you are right to demand the need for the proper defender type skills first, player/distributor second.
