Gus Poyet 'to take legal action' over Brighton sacking

Former Brighton manager Gus Poyet says he will take legal action over the club's decision to dismiss him for gross misconduct.

The Uruguayan, 45, was sacked in June following his suspension, an internal investigation and disciplinary hearing.

"I totally disagree with every allegation and accusation the club has put on me," Poyet told Sky Sports.

"I'll take action because it's important for me. It is the best way for the truth to come out."

The reason for Poyet's sacking has not been revealed by either party, with Brighton saying the matter would stay confidential "to ensure and maintain confidentiality and dignity" after the former Chelsea midfielder's unsuccessful appeal against his dismissal.

Chairman Tony Bloom told a fans' forum on Thursday that Poyet had asked to leave the club in March.

Poyet opted against a move to Reading, who at the time were in the middle of an unsuccessful fight against Premier League relegation, shortly after he is alleged to have made the request.

The League Managers' Association has stated that it "does not consider that the charges against Poyet amount to gross misconduct" and that its legal team is available to discuss his case.

Poyet was the sixth longest-serving manager in English football at the time of his dismissal, leading Brighton from the League One relegation zone when he took charge in November 2009 to fourth place in the Championship at the end of last season.

Spaniard Oscar Garcia has since taken charge of the Seagulls and he led them to a 2-1 defeat against Leeds in his first competitive match of the season on Saturday.

Just heard Poyet saying what happened with the Reading approach. Seems he got the shit-end of the stick once Brighton didn't win the play-offs and knowing he'd want money to strengthen, they fucked him off on some trumped up charges. Tight arse bastards.

That is pretty amazing. 92 clubs (I assume they are talking about the clubs in league here) in the four divisions and four years in charge makes you sixth longest serving manager. Then again, apparently Brendan Rogers is the fifth longest serving manager in Premier league. Food for thought.

It's shocking actually. I mean, there was always impatient chairmen but there were also clubs, often in lower divisions, who weren't even looking for instant results necesserily and instead were looking for slow but steady progress. Managers were usually chosen accordingly and were given freedom to build the operation. Granted, these clubs weren't usually aiming for the stars and therefore "lacking ambition" but they had usually found their natural level which their supporters were satisfied with. I mean if you support let's say Walsall (completely randomly picked) I don't think you are even dreaming of Premier League. Maybe you make cup run every once in a while and maybe after a REALLY good season you fight for promotion to Championship. But hey, that's what you signed up for. No need to chase the shadows. You go out and enjoy the game in saturdays just as any supporter of City or Arsenal or rags. Experience is still pretty much the same.

I really don't see it as much of a problem as I used to. I mean, it is what it is, the top top teams (that's us, rags, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.... Tottenham have potential to belong to this group as well) are on whole different planet to everyone else. These clubs fight with elite of the world football and therefore I don't even see it as a pyramid anymore like I used to. It's more like these teams live in the moon and Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland are on top of the pyramid.

Do I like it? Hell no. But I've learned to admit that's the way it goes. There used to be talk of closing the Premier League but it has all vanished. Why? Because these top top teams aren't afraid of relegation after a freak season anymore. That's just not going to happen. If club like ours go down, we will not go down the divisions, stakes are so high that we will GO DOWN, period.

It's the Champion's League that is the be all end all competition now and it's ALL about the money. That's how the owners and chairmen see it and that's how all the younger supporters will see it in the future. I, personally, just can't seem to get on with the times but maybe even I will learn eventually. My prediction is that in 30 years time we will be playing some weird Euro league, maybe even World league.

Now what all that has to do with the original point? Teams who don't have the same resources, fanbase, stadia, infrastructure etc etc in that pyramid NEED to stop chasing the shadows. Without trillionbillionaire taking over it's NOT going to happen. 1st and 2nd division clubs without strong supporterbase and infrastructure (Sheffield United and Wolves at this time of age) need to stop harping on about Premier League and adjust their targets according to their realm.

Poyet took Brighton to the absolute maximum heights they could ever go to. As a manager he had also outgrown them. He is Premier League quality manager in charge of what is essentially 1st division club.
