I really don't see it as much of a problem as I used to. I mean, it is what it is, the top top teams (that's us, rags, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.... Tottenham have potential to belong to this group as well) are on whole different planet to everyone else. These clubs fight with elite of the world football and therefore I don't even see it as a pyramid anymore like I used to. It's more like these teams live in the moon and Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland are on top of the pyramid.
Do I like it? Hell no. But I've learned to admit that's the way it goes. There used to be talk of closing the Premier League but it has all vanished. Why? Because these top top teams aren't afraid of relegation after a freak season anymore. That's just not going to happen. If club like ours go down, we will not go down the divisions, stakes are so high that we will GO DOWN, period.
It's the Champion's League that is the be all end all competition now and it's ALL about the money. That's how the owners and chairmen see it and that's how all the younger supporters will see it in the future. I, personally, just can't seem to get on with the times but maybe even I will learn eventually. My prediction is that in 30 years time we will be playing some weird Euro league, maybe even World league.
Now what all that has to do with the original point? Teams who don't have the same resources, fanbase, stadia, infrastructure etc etc in that pyramid NEED to stop chasing the shadows. Without trillionbillionaire taking over it's NOT going to happen. 1st and 2nd division clubs without strong supporterbase and infrastructure (Sheffield United and Wolves at this time of age) need to stop harping on about Premier League and adjust their targets according to their realm.
Poyet took Brighton to the absolute maximum heights they could ever go to. As a manager he had also outgrown them. He is Premier League quality manager in charge of what is essentially 1st division club.

Brighton are one of the best supported clubs in the division and have ambition to increase capacity and fill it. Of course they have the very realistic chance if promotion.
I'm not sure what your point about Wolves and Sheffield United is, but as two of the grandest clubs in English fiotball, their ambitions should lie entirely in the top division.
Modern football is about the money and it's wrong. Just because we have now gate crashed the party doesn't make the inequality in the distribution of cash right. There has never been more money in the game and yet none of it is allowed to trickle down to our smaller clubs, it is soaked up by the greedy few. It's wrong. I'm really surprised to see a "know your place" post from you Mr Pants.

My point, which I assume everyone except you understood, was that out of 1st division clubs Sheffied United and Wolverhampton are THE ONLY ONES equipped for Premier League football.
Brighton's highest ever league finish was 13th in 81/82 season and then they made it to FA Cup final 1983. In that golden period they spent grand total of three seasons in English top flight. That is in 110 seasons of professional football. They simply are not naturally top flight club. They never were and never will be. Poyet took them to amazing heights and it's been another great period for them with the new ground and all. But again, this is the absolute zenith for them. And they should've paid their tribute to Poyet for taking them there.
And I NEVER meant that I'm ok with modern football. I long for the days of my childhood and teens with competitive leagues, European knock out competitions for teams that had actually won something, realistic chances for less fancied teams making a run in league or cup etc etc etc. Just like I said in the post you quoted. But I've learned to accept it. No matter how much I curse about it, it's not going to change. And these new generations of supporters, they have completely different focus to people my age, nevermind older people. That's just the way it goes. Need to get on with the times.
And I didn't mean it as "know your place post" as such. I do realise how amazingly, ridiculously lucky we are to be included in the elite of world football. But if the shoe was on the other foot and we'd still be in lower leagues and Sheik had never happened and so on, I would say that we should concentrate on living within our means and setting our targets according to our natural level in the food chain. Which I feel is easily mid-table club in Premier League even without Sheik. And THERE'S the gap I'm talking about. Without Sheik, even as a mid-table Premier League club, we would be light years away from the very elite.
I suppose my point is that you can still enjoy football. Fucking top 4 or fucking Champion's League or even fucking Premier League are not be all end all of supporting a football club. If you support naturally 1st division club you can get just as much enjoyment out of it as any supporter of top 4 club. Just as long as you are willing to admit "it's never going to happen for us" when you look at Champion's League on telly.

Fair enough. I think that's that cleared up then.
I thought it was odd.
But Brighton will make the Prem I fancy.
