I watched him for England after he joined us, he was bringing the ball down and playing short passes and moving for the return only for the midfield to ignore him. When they inevitably lost the ball it made him look like he was out of position when in actual fact the guy on the ball made a shit choice.
He far better than most give him credit for.
He is prone to lapses in concentration though, don't forget the cock up he had then left for dead when QPR scored against us on our title winning season, he almost handed them the win and the rags the title.
So is Nastasic prone to lapses. There's very few that aren't and they are the elite. Some of the stick being thrown at both on here is just fucking ridiculous really.
When a promising kid comes into the team, I tend to think ' ooh he did that really well but ohh he fucked up there, he needs to work on A B C etc, & I'm happy that there's a young player who has a decent chance, but will most likely hit several hurdles over the years, as Micah Richards for example, is continuing to. That's what I've seen from Nastasic: a lot of good things to work with.
Then suddenly people are likening him to Bobby fucking Moore & various other world class, legendary players.
He COULD become such a player, because at 20, NONE of us know what he will be capable of & how his game will develop, including the Count, Txiki, the fucking media or Sheikh Mansour or anyone; it's guesswork. At the moment he has several weaknesses. If he still has them at 22ish, then he will probably be on his way. People like Boyata, Lescott, Vinny, who also lack true pace, are slightly more fortunate because they are brick shithouses, so if they suddenly get it right, they are in business; they have an advantage. Nasti, John Terry, Puyol etc have to find another way. It is possible but more difficult.
Nastasic may make up for a lack of top pace by reading the game brilliantly, being clever, or just being a total cunt like Terry or Bruce. He may develop the aerial ability required by similar means & be able to sort out players like Andy Carrol by nudging them off the ball or treading on their toes & become dominant. He may start doing it this season.
Or he may not.
He was not doing it last season; he was a promising kid, playing his own game & trying to keep his own game together & trying to learn; not a dominant Premier League centre half.
I have no idea how Lescott will be this season, he may stink & need to retire for all I know, but his partnership with Vinny, when we won the league was the best, possibly anywhere, & we should have worked our bollocks off as a team & manager, to get it working again, with Nasti learning his trade & being introduced gradually. Not fucking ripped it apart.
