ROUND-UP
After missing out on the signing of Real Madrid star Pepe, Manuel Pellegrini is stepping up his search for a centre-half, according to the Mirror.
The paper claims the Chilean has drawn up a hit-list of potential buys which is said to include Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Napoli's Paolo Cannavaro.
“The new City boss, who has watched his side ship eight goals in their last three pre-season games, has been frustrated in a summer-long pursuit of his defensive top target, Real Madrid's Pepe, by the Spanish giants' refusal to sell,” writes David Anderson.
“He has drawn up a list of alternatives believed to include Schalke’s coveted Greece international Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who has been tracked by Liverpool, and Napoli skipper Paolo Cannavaro.
“Schalke are determined to drive a hard bargain if they do cash in on Papadopoulos this summer.
“City have been offered Cannavaro, although it is understood the 32-year-old Italian - younger brother of Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro - is down Pellegrini’s list of targets.”

Elsewhere, French boss Didier Deschamps has hailed City’s Samir Nasri ahead of Les Bleus’ clash with Belgium on Wednesday.
“Deschamps' men head into the meeting at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels having lost to both Uruguay and Brazil in June,” reports goal.com.
“Manchester City man Nasri has not played for France for over a year, but Deschamps is confident his return will be a big boost to the squad.
“Nasri has voiced his delight at the recall and insists he does not mind where he is selected to play.”
Finally, City loan star Reece Wabara is keen to repay former Blue Paul Dickov for the faith he has shown in him during his time at Doncaster Rovers.
“The 21-year-old joined on an initial one month deal from Manchester City last week, reuniting him with Dickov who signed him on loan at Oldham last season,” reports the South Yorkshire Times.
“And he is out to justify Dickov’s on-going faith in him as well as forcing himself into the thoughts of new City boss Manuel Pellegrini.”

Manchester City re-enter race to sign Real Madrid star Pepe
The Premier League club are keen to add an experienced defender to their ranks in light of Matija Nastasic's injury but face a fight to land Real Madrid's Portuguese international
Manuel Pellegrini has given the green light to Manchester City’s renewed pursuit of Real Madrid’s Pepe, Goal can reveal.
City made a tentative enquiry for Pepe last month but were unwilling to meet the Spanish giants £30m valuation of the 30-year-old but are hopeful of finding a resolution, particularly with Madrid keen to secure funds in order to finance their attempts to broker a deal to bring Gareth Bale to the Bernabeu.
Matija Nastasic’s ankle injury, which he picked up during the club’s pre-season tour of Hong Kong, will keep the Serbia international out of action for the first six weeks of the season and has accentuated City’s need for a new defender.
Having been eliminated during the group stages of the Champions League in each of the last two seasons, Pellegrini had identified the need for an experienced centre-half before Nastasic was stretchered off against Sunderland in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy a week ago.
The Spanish giants are unlikely to let the man they signed from Porto for £23m six years ago leave without a fight, especially considering Raphael Varane, the player who took Pepe's place in Jose Mourinho's starting XI last season, is still nursing his way back from knee surgery.
Moreover, the player himself insisted earlier this week he was determined to battle for his place in the plans of new Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.
He said: “I have signed a contract with Madrid, my future is an issue for the president," he said. “I just train hard and try to give my best for the team. I am ready to fight for my place.”
City have already spent close to £100m on reinforcements this summer in the shape of former Sevilla duo Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas as well as Brazil international midfielder Fernandinho and Montenegro forward Stevan Jovetic. They begin their Premier League campaign against Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on Monday.

It is no surprise Manchester City are back in for a player of Pepe's calibre - he fits all of the criteria they are looking for - but they will not find it easy to sign him.
Madrid are suffering something of a defensive crisis at the moment with Raphael Varane yet to recover fully from the injury he suffered at the end of last season.
Fabio Coentrao, meanwhile, has hardly figured in pre-season and is likely to be sold. That would leave Carlo Ancelotti with just six recognised defenders on his books and selling Pepe for anything less than the club's £30 million valuation would probably be considered too much of a risk.

Manchester City plot transfer raid for new centre-half as they keep leaking pre-season goals
Real Madrid won't sell Pepe, so Pellegrini has drawn up hit-list believed to include Schalke's Papadopoulos and Napoli's Cannavaro
Manuel Pellegrini is stepping up his search for a centre-half to plug the holes in Manchester City’s leaky defence.
After already splashing out £90million this summer on forward players to boost City’s firepower, Pellegrini must now deal with what is an unfamiliar problem at the back for the Blues.
The new City boss, who has watched his side ship eight goals in their last three pre-season games, has been frustrated in a summer-long pursuit of his defensive top target, Real Madrid's Pepe, by the Spanish giants' refusal to sell.
He has drawn up a list of alternatives believed to include Schalke’s coveted Greece international Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who has been tracked by Liverpool, and Napoli skipper Paolo Cannavaro.
Schalke are determined to drive a hard bargain if they do cash in on Papadopoulos this summer and sporting director Horst Heldt claims: “There are a lot of clubs to take into account.”
Is he worth the money he's cost? Click here for our Bundesliga expert Ross Dunbar's scouting report on Papadopoulos.
City have been offered Cannavaro, although it is understood the 32-year-old Italian - younger brother of Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro - is down Pellegrini’s list of targets.
The 59-year-old wants at least one new defender, as Matija Nastasic’s pre-season ankle injury means he has been left with just two senior central defenders, Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott, going into the new campaign.
Both started in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in Helsinki and are set to continue in the line-up with Nastasic out for another month.
City released former skipper Kolo Toure when his contract ran out at the end of last season and ideally, Pellegrini would like to restore the club’s complement of central defenders to four before the transfer window closes on September 2.
The new boss criticised his side’s defending after their 5-3 win over AC Milan in pre-season, and their weekend display against Arsenal was also below the required standard.
That defence has been City's bedrock in recent years, and has been, statistically, the meanest in the Premier League during the last two season.
Captain Kompany refuses to be alarmed by their new fragility at the back, and is confident it is just temporary.
The Belgian says the players felt tired against Arsenal because they had put in a punishing week in training to get them in top condition for the start of the Premier League campaign, which begins for them against Newcastle next Monday night.
“OK, we conceded three goals from three chances, but it was not a bad game,” said Kompany.
“If it was not good enough, I would say it, but during the week we did an incredible amount of work.
“This game was just a top-up for all the physical work we have done and it was just what we needed.
“I know that both teams had a different week leading up to this game. The information I got is that their build-up and our build-up were completely different, so we are happy with what we got out of it.”

Elsewhere, West Brom have renewed their efforts to land City's Scott Sinclair.
They are discussing a season-long loan deal for the forgotten winger, with a view to a permanent move next summer.
It is believed City want the deal for Sinclair to be worth £6m, which would include a £2m loan fee

Image
Vincent Kompany insists Manchester City have no defensive concerns
Vincent Kompany has played down concerns over the state of Manchester City's defence heading into the new season.
City have boasted the best defensive record in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons, and few alterations have been made to a proven unit over the summer.
New boss Manuel Pellegrini was, however, critical of the Blues' display during a 5-3 friendly victory over AC Milan and saw his side breached a further three times against Arsenal on Saturday.
It has been suggested that he is now planning to dip into the transfer market before the window closes on 2nd September, but club captain Kompany insists City remain in good shape and have been placing more emphasis on fitness over recent weeks than results and performances.
He said in the Daily Mirror: "Okay, we conceded three goals from three chances (against Arsenal), but it wasn't a bad game.
"If it wasn't good enough, I would say it, but during the week we did an incredible amount of work.
"This game was just a top-up for all the physical work we've done and it was just what we needed.
"I know both teams had a different week leading up to this game. The information I got is their build-up and our build-up were completely different, so we are happy with what we got out of it."

Chelsea Frontrunners To Sign Willian After City Pull Out Of Running
Chelsea have emerged as the favourites to land Brazilian Willian after Manchester City have taken themselves out of the running to acquire the youngster, according to reports.
The Daily Star reported that Manchester City have ended their interest in the player, which leaves Chelsea to pursue him if they wish to.
The article also reveals that Manchester City had a bid for the Anzhi Makhachkala star rejected by the Russian club last week.
It is also reported that Willian is the subject of transfer rumours because the owners of the Russian club declared their plan to sell the club’s top players and earners.
Willian falls into this bracket and therefore interest was sparked in the Premier League.
The same article reveals that Mourinho is interested in bringing the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge as part of his new era at the club.
Whether Chelsea sign Willian will largely depend on whether Wayne Rooney leaves Manchester United for the London club this season.

Manuel’s ready to shuffle aces in his Manchester City pack
With City’s opening games just six days away, we try to predict what side the new boss at the Etihad will pick for his first match
Six days to City’s big kick off – and the Blues who are scratching their heads trying to predict Manuel Pellegrini’s first team selection are none the wiser.
The good news is that Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who brings his fragile side to the Etihad Stadium next Monday, will also be agonising over exactly what he will be up against.
No one is entirely sure, outside the coterie of Pellegrini’s inner circle, exactly what the Engineer’s blueprint for success is going to be.
Tactics nerds have pored over Pellegrini’s past seeking clues to how his side will line up. Will it be 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-2-2-2?
But the fact is that Pellegrini does not think in those terms, dismissing such formation talk as ‘telephone numbers’ – meaningless in the kind of rotating, fluid system he likes to use.
The easiest way to look at what Pellegrini will do is to pick the goalkeeper and back four – not a particularly difficult task – and then second-guess which six players will play in front of them.
There are all kinds of imponderables, not least how close to fitness striker Sergio Aguero is.
Normally, the Argentine would be one of a small handful of shoo-ins for City’s strongest team, along with Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and David Silva.
But his pre-season has been disrupted by a knee injury which means he has not kicked a ball in anger so it is highly unlikely that he will be involved. He was left out of the Argentina squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Italy.
Matija Nastasic is also out with an ankle injury he picked up on the treacherous Hong Kong pitch last month, which makes the back four selection much more straightforward.
So here at M.u.E.N. Sport we decided to run the risk of eggy faces, before the season has even started, by taking a stab at what Pellegrini intends to do.
And having picked our team, it matches the XI which the manager set out in Saturday’s friendly against Arsenal in Helsinki. Of course, that makes sense, as the manager is likely to have selected his preferred team for the final warm-up match.

Here is how we see it...

GOALKEEPER
No real argument here. At the end of last season, Costel Pantilimon was adamant he would leave, to ensure he got first team football. The departure of Roberto Mancini, who dropped him for the FA Cup final, changed all that, as did the fact that neither Hull nor Fiorentina could come up with a decent salary package. But Hart remains City’s number one.

DEFENCE
Again, nothing too difficult here.
The return of Micah Richards makes for an interesting battle for the right back spot, but possession is nine-tenths of the law and Pablo Zabaleta was the Blues’ most consistent and committed performer last season.
Richards could even convert, finally, to the centre back spot which has always been mooted as his best position, especially with Kolo Toure leaving to join Liverpool.
At the moment, he is more than useful cover for both positions, but with his injury bother behind him, he will be pushing hard to get his place back.
With Nastasic out, Kompany and Joleon Lescott will resume their title-winning partnership, unless Pellegrini gets his wish and lands another centre back in the next few days.
Nastasic probably would have got the nod, but Lescott – whose future remains uncertain – has a big chance to impress the new manager.
Left-back is also a shoo-in for Gael Clichy, to the point that Aleks Kolarov did not even figure against Arsenal, even though seven outfield substitutions were made.
That may be because Clichy is behind in terms of minutes under his belt after suffering a minor injury during pre-season, but the Frenchman will take some shifting.

MIDFIELD
All attackers, all defenders in Pellegrini’s vision. The ‘holding’ midfielders will be expected to get into the box and score goals while the ‘attacking’ midfielders should do their fair share of tracking back and tackling.
The permutations are almost endless with the wealth of talent at his disposal, but we feel that the Helsinki line-up was a major clue as to Pellegrini’s thinking.
A manager does not sanction a £30m outlay for a player without intending to put him straight into the first team, even if Fernandinho has looked workmanlike, rather than outstanding in pre-season.
He has had to adapt to a new life, and a frighteningly tough training schedule, so it may be a few months before he really finds his feet, but we feel he will be in the starting team.
Toure’s inclusion goes without saying. Last season was not his finest, as he failed to have a major impact in the ordinary games, but statistics show he was still City’s most effective player.
The nominal right midfielder is a tough shout. City fans are desperate for jet-heeled Jesus Navas to be let loose on trembling Premier League left backs, but they may have to wait for an hour or so of the first game.
James Milner has shown his worth to the new boss with some impressive pre-season displays, and his astonishing fitness levels mean he has ridden the tough training sessions better than most.
He can work up and down, ensuring the left side of Newcastle’s defence feels the pace – and then give way to the fresh, frantic pace of the Spain international. Silva is a little way behind in terms of preparation, but his performance level rarely dips below the standard of ‘good’ so he will be in from the beginning.

ATTACK
Aguero’s problem means that Pellegrini will be choosing two from Edin Dzeko, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic.
We believe he will go with the men who have has most pre-season minutes, and who have had made the biggest impact – Dzeko and Negredo.
The Bosnian has been re-born since the departure of Mancini, comforted by the new boss’s reassuring words. He has scored four in his last four starts in pre-season, and has looked sharp and purposeful.
Negredo has netted in consecutive games against Bayern Munich and Arsenal, almost identical goals which were all about strength, single-mindedness and sharp finishing, while Jovetic’s preparations so far have been low key.
Our selection looks like a 4-4-2, but will play as a 4-6-0.
Pellegrini won’t bother about any of that. He just hopes that the ‘telephone numbers’ dial M for Murder.

The Premier Leagues New Signings: Best XI
With the new season starting Saturday, we look some of the new faces at their new clubs, and we make a starting XI from the best Premier League signings so far this summer.

Manager: Jose Mourinho:
The returning ''special one'' gets the nod over Manuel Pellegrini, the Manchester City manager.

Formation: 4-2-2-2

GK: Maarten Stekelenburg, Fulham.
Martin Jol snapped up his fellow countryman and former employee at Ajax Stekelenburg from Roma for £4.8million. With 58 caps for Holland and World Cup experience, he could prove a prove a perfect replacement for Mark Schwarzer.

RB: John Brayford, Cardiff City.
Snapped up from Derby County for £1.5million the 25 year old will look to impress as he gets his chance to shine in the Premier League. He earned plaudits in his 3 years at Derby for his ability to combine an attacking role with his defensive duties.

CB: Dejan Lovren, Southampton.
Southampton signed Croatian international Lovren for £8.5million. Clocking up over 70 appearances at Lyon the 24 year old won a Coup de France in his time at the French club. He can slot in at right-back and left back as well as centre half, demonstrating his versatility.

CB: Stephen Caulker, Cardiff City.
Jan Vertonghen and Michael Dawson meant the young Englishman seen his chances limited at Tottenham Hotspur, but he is sure to nail down a regular starting spot for new boys Cardiff City. At 21 years old Caulker is has already won his first England cap, and at £8million he could prove a bargain for Malky Mackays men.

LB: Martin Olsson, Norwich City.
Chris Hughton has added Gary Hooper and Ricky van Wolfsinkel to give the Canaries firepower up front, but its Swede Martin Olsson who gets the nod for Norwich in the New Signings XI. Brought in from Blackburn the speedster will relish linking up with other new recruit Nathan Redmond on the left side of midfield.

CM: Fernandinho, Manchester City.
Fernandinho moved to the Eastlands from Shaktar Donetsk for a hefty £30million. The Brazilian is hardly a rising star at the age of 28, but he is a player who alongside Yaya Toure can add a new dimension to a Man City midfield that lost its way last season.

CM: Paulinho, Tottenham Hotspur.
He looks a fine buy at £17million for Andre Villas Boas men. A star player and a key cog in the wheel for Brazil in their successful confederations cup campaign, the former Corinthians star will look to form a formidable midfield parnership with fellow countryman Sandro.

RAM: Jesus Navas, Manchester City.
Brought in from Sevilla along with Alvaro Negredo, the Spaniard will bring electric pace and trickery to the right flank, something which Manchester City did not have under James Milner. or flop Scott Sinclair. Clocked up over 400 appearances and won 6 trophies in his time at Sevilla.

LAM: Andre Schurrie, Chelsea.
Jose Mourinhos first signing on his return to Chelsea, for £18million Chelsea have bagged a speedy intelligent and versatile winger. Was one of the stars of the Bundesliga last season with Bayer Leverkusen, who finished one point behind Borrusia Dortmund in 3rd last season.

ST: Roberto Soldado, Tottenham Hotspur.
At £26million the Valencia man didn't come cheap. But the Spaniard has the ability and goalscoring prowess to make a huge impact for Tottenham this season. Spurs fans were crying out for a quality out-and-out striker, and they've got a world class one in the form of the 28 year old.

ST: Wilfried Bony, Swansea City.
Perhaps a controversial selection up-front with Negredo and Jovetic signing for Man City, but I believe the Drogba-esque forward will have a big impact at Swansea in his first season. Brought in from Vitesse Arnhem for £12million, Bony blasted 31 goals in 30 games for the Dutch side.

Substitutes:
Simon Mignolet: Liverpool
Jordi Amat: Swansea City
Victor Wanyama: Southampton
Nacer Chadli: Tottenham Hotspur
Luis Alberto: Liverpool
Stevan Jovetic: Manchester City
Alvaro Negredo: Manchester City

Stefan Savic had a game to forget as Fiorentina's promising pre-season start flounders toward the end.
The upcoming Italian Serie A season is looking like being one of the most competitive races for the Scudetto in a while. While Juventus remain the favourites - Napoli, Roma, Lazio and the Milan’s cannot be discounted after productive summers.
But, for those who like to back the dark horse, look no further than Fiorentina.
La Viola have made some excellent summer acquisitions with the likes of Mario Gomez, Joaquin and Massimo Ambrosini arriving - while Giussepe Rossi’s return from injury is yet another bonus.
And until yesterday their pre-season campaign gave us cause for optimism. Vincenzo Montella’s side have scored a whopping 23 goals in their five pre-season games - but didn’t manage any yesterday against Sporting Lisbon.
It was the clubs final game before embarking on their Europa League campaign against Grasshopper Zurich.
And it was not the ideal preparation - as the underachieving Portuguese outfit won a comfortable game 3-0.
Fiorentina had chances, some of which should have been buried.
One of those opportunities fell at the feet of former Manchester City defender Stevan Savic.
But he missed the sitter, moments after gifting Sporting their second goal.
His atrocious back-pass to Gustavo Munua acted as a through ball for the Portuguese side - and the ball was duly slotted into the back of the empty net.
Savic has been a revelation since arriving in Florence, as part of the swap deal for Matija Nastasic last summer, showing little sign of the common errors he was making during his time at The Etihad.

Liverpool's loan move for Bayern Munich left-back Diego Contento, 23, will depend on whether Arsenal are able to complete a deal for Bayern midfielder Luiz Gustavo, 26, after the German champions confirmed they would only let one of the two players leave this summer. Daily Express

The Anfield club were also targeting Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa but the 24-year-old has reached a verbal agreement with the club to extend his current contract which comes to an end in 2015. Marca

Crystal Palace have targeted a loan move for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent with a view to signing the 29-year-old on a permanent basis if they avoid relegation from the Premier League. Daily Telegraph

Newcastle are unlikely to sign Bent and also appear set to miss out on Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis, but the Magpies will now turn their attentions to trying to bring in Genk striker Jelle Vossen, 24. for £7m. Daily Star

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has imposed a ban on discussing his attempts to leave Anfield during the international break. DSSC

City’s European tour ended disastrously in Holland with a 5-1 defeat against AZ Alkmaar with Roger Palmer scoring City’s consolation goal. Though City had coasted past several Swedish sides and beaten Dutch outfit SC Heracles 3-2 five days earlier, the defeat was a clear sign that something wasn't quite right with the team that finished fourth in the league the previous May. Even with five senior players absent, the margin of the defeat was of concern to manager Tony Book and the frailties shown would re-emerge through what would be a frustrating campaign during the 1978/79 season

GOLDEN WAG OF THE DAY

From Brazil to California, Adriana Lima has become one of the most famous Victoria's Secret model in the world.
She has been in countless magazines, mostly on the covers, and found her way into the WAG world by dating and later marrying Marko Jaric.
On top of the marriage to Marko, the couple has a child, a girl, born in November of last year. Her name is Valentina Lima Jaric.
By having a child, Adriana went from WAG to MILF overnight. Although she can be both, the MILF status is a lot more prestigious and is a permanent move. It is easy to be a WAG and then not be a WAG but when you become a parent, it is for life.

Looks like I'm going to tell BT Sports to stick it up their arses now. Little Mickey Owen suggests that we'll be fighting it out for 3rd or 5th, depending on how you read it.

Michael Owen: Chelsea will edge Man Utd to win title... and Liverpool can make top four

MICHAEL OWEN has backed Chelsea to overcome his old club Manchester United to win the Premier League crown.

The Blues have brought Marco van Ginkel, Andre Schurrle and Mark Schwarzer to Stamford Bridge - but the biggest addition is that of boss Jose Mourinho.

Legend Owen, who retired at the end of last season, believes the Special One has what it takes to return the title to Chelsea.

He said: "Chelsea are my favourites to win the league irrespective of transfer activity. The return of Jose Mourinho has transformed the atmosphere at Stamford Bridge.

"Mourinho has never lost at home in the Premier League and the Special One thoroughly deserves his self-appointed title.

“While United have the most stable squad, the club as a whole is going through a period of transition both in terms of the manager and the backroom staff.

"Much will depend on the form of Robin Van Persie and, if he hits the heights of last season, United can definitely expect to be in the running.”

Striker Owen scored 150 Premier League goals in his 16-year playing career - and 158 for Liverpool in all competitions.

He's keeping close tabs on the situation surrounding Luis Suarez but believes if they can keep him, Champions League qualification is a possibility.

“Replacing Suarez would be near-impossible and more than one forward replacement will have to be brought in to replicate his goals tally”

He said: "Much depends on star man Luis Suarez. If he goes it could be an uphill battle for Brendan Rogers who has urged the Liverpool fans to be patient over the summer months.

"Replacing him would be near-impossible and more than one forward replacement will have to be brought in to replicate his goals tally.

"If Suarez stays and a couple more signings join the ranks then the top four could even be within their sights.”
In the words of my Old Man, "Life will never be the same without Man City, so get it in while you can".
