Since he came to Villa, it seems as if the club and fans perform the same futile task every time the transfer window opens: a rumour appears saying that Ireland is leaving, serious interest seems to form, the window closes and we all look around to find Ireland still here. "Well, I guess we'll just push him up the hill again next time," we collectively say.

I suppose in a way it's sad: a hugely talented lad, but so far off the surface of this planet, its a wonder NASA aren't being consulted.

A classic 1 season wonder. Got himself a spanking new contract that will probably set him up for life providing he doesn't piss it up the wall on daft cars/fish tanks etc

He hasn't done barely a thing on a football field for 4 years now, that's the nub of it. City tried, Villa tried, Newcastle tried and now he's picking up his money to turn up at training until Villa can get shut, a la Wayne Bridge at City.

I think he had said that in that pre-season he had followed the fitness regimen of a kick-boxer personal trainer, or somebody who trains kick-boxers.
I remember it was in a preliminary round of the Europa Leage when we were in danger of going out - I think against a Danish team -, where he lifted everybody up by his coat-tails, with his non-stop running and drive.

I've been interested in how he was getting on at Villa: for the most part they seem to consider him 'daft as a brush', and/or a waste of space, but he has had his 'loyalists'
But it did surprise me when he won their 'Player of the Season'

What most of you lot won't know is that every so often his partner will make these statements, in whatever tv show she happens to get invited on, that 'Stephen' would consider playing for Ireland again, if Trap gave him a call!!!!!!!
It would be funny if it wasn't so sad: Trap has long dropped him from consideration for even a preliminary squad for Ireland

Yes, he has talent, shined for a while. But it's all driven by the mental aspect which he lost completely. His head got too big and he couldn't get it back, the fact that he's clearly not the brightest wouldn't have helped. Hard to feel sympathy here
