CL Pots & Draw

Postby AG7 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 8:53 pm

So we are confirmed in Pot 3 now for Thursday's draw ... and depending on tomorrow's results Juve could move out of pot 3 into pot 2 ...

Group of death coming right up:
Barcelona / Juventus / City / Leverkusen

But at the same time this could happen too ... Benfica / Marseille / City / Austria Wien (yeah, right)

Thursday at 1645 hrs is it? Sometimes helps to know when it is.

Slightly off topic and apologies to the OP, but I have to ask.... Why was 'Saul Goodman' posting as a Cardiff fan on one of their forums over the weekend???

Back on topic, the draw UK time, will 'start' at 17:45 but all the bollox that goes with it means the draw in earnest will actually get rolling some 20+ minutes later and then drag on some while, so by about 18:45ish we will know our full fate.

I think I went B Munich, Juventus & a Russian or Ukrainian team in the season prediction league!

I'd hazard a guess that it isn't exactly the least popular online nickname in the world over the past 2-3 years...

So thats Schalke, Olympiacos and Copenhagen for the filth then.

We´ll end up with Barcelona, PSG and Napoli.

It's a fix.

I can't see anything other than a difficult draw again but at least it's exciting.

Uefa are a joke the way they safeguard the established european teams ensuring favourable draws year on year to protect the status of these teams. How on earth Arsenal can be considered a team deserving of a place in the top pot is anyones guess. They have not managed a top two league finish since 04/05 yet they deserve to be considered one europes elite?

We have not earned the right to be in pot 1 yet. I hope we get a hard group and win it then we can show the world we mean business. I hope we get barca, i want to see us play the best teams. Were in pot 3 so lets deal with it.

I don't think that you've quite grasped the inequality of a system designed to give advantage to the old established order - we all want to see our team play the best but would quite like to see that happen in the latter stages rather than as a Custers last stand affair with everything loaded against us in the group stages group of death.
If we had De Gea and the rags had Hart, we'd be top with a 9 point lead and they'd be in 12th place - that's the difference between a 'good' keeper and a 'top class' keeper - 12 places - think about it.

The old established order have earned the right to be in pot 1 whether we like that fact or not. The better you do in europe the better your co-efficient rating gets, its simple and theres nothing wrong with that. We have to earn the right to be in a easier group. Stop whinging and be glad were in the group stages.

I'm living 30 minutes away from Copenhagen so that would be the dream draw for me. Sadly CL games are the only games I may get to this year so anything in the north of Germany or Poland would suit me down to the ground.

I agree with the sentiments here, but the coefficients are slightly untoward. They take a long time to build up, and also a long time to lose. I read somewhere last season that it would take something like 11 or 12 seasons of finishing bottom of the groups for Barcelona to lose their Pot 1 seeding. Likewise, domestic performance (apart from the qualifying for UEFA competitions aspect) is not taken into account, leading to the situation where Arsenal - provided they finish in the Top 4 in the league - will have a higher UEFA coefficient than us for quite a few years to come, still.

Thats because Barca have gained such a high co-efficient rating by being successful in europe. Arsenal have been in champs league for last 17 seasons. They have been in quarter finals, semi finals and a final. Their high ratings have been earned.
