Humble Pie - Players

Postby Colin the King » Mon Sep 23, 2013 8:40 am

I've had an irrational, almost CARL esque, dislike of Nasri ever since he joined and always felt we were weaker with him in the side (which was largely true last season).

After his performances this season so far but especially yesterday, it might be time to cut myself a slice.

So, with that in mind, which players over the years have made you eat humble pie for better or worse?

Zaba.....I was a firm believer that Richards was a much better RB than Zabaleta could ever be, but his performances over the past 12 months have proved me wrong....and I glad too
"If we fire our manager after just one bad season - We'll become Chelsea"
"If we think we can fix the problem by buying expensive players - We'll become City"
"If we remember the good times to entertain us during the bad times - We'll become Liverpool"

So, keep calm and do it the United way

"We invest in young players, That is what we are good at — we’re not like other clubs who can spend fortunes on proven goods. We know that Manchester City are going to pay stupid money, pay silly salaries and all that. We can’t do anything about it. We concentrate on what we can do to try to bring players in for the right reasons. We invest in those who will be with the club for a long time, who will create the character of the club, who will create excitement for our fans. We are very proud of that and we are going to continue that way" - Alex Ferguson 14th May 2012

I was just thinking last night, for all of Clichy's extra pace, and better defensive work, he would never in a million years have sent a cross as perfect as that for Aguero, and because he played so high up the pitch it pushed Valencia back all day.

And me to some extent (although I still don't think he can defend for shit) he was a proper asset pushing Utd back yesterday.

Nasri would have been out the door last Christmas for me, but he is a changed man & was better than Silva yesterday, & Nastasic has really got stuck in doing some proper defending recently, which I've been on his case about. Well done to all 3.

Never imagined saying this, but could Nasri actually keep Silva out long term? He just seems so in tune with the players around him and probably offers more of a goal threat, but Silva at his best is like no-one else.

Silva is very special, as you say, but Nasri (the new version) works harder & the team looks better balanced. Imo, Nasri can play behind a striker as well though, so in theory both could still play in this system. We really do have a lot of options for all kinds of formations.

Mines Nasri too.

Until last night his name in our house has simply been "the fanny"

In all honestly though he's been winning me over since preseason. I admire a footballer that can say he's had a shit year and it's up to him to fix it. Didn't moan and took responsibility. This for some reason is as rare as unicorns in today's game.

It might be good for Silva to not be one of the first names on the team sheet. He has played a huge amount of football in the past few years for club and country. Similar to Mata at Chelsea there is every chance he may burn out. Players of that size and technical skills do not tend to last as long as players Toure or Gerrard.

Thinking back a few years, I remember genuinely thinking, and arguing (for no logical reason) that Trabelsi would be a brilliant right-back. Now that's embarrassing. Although he did score a screamer at the swamp.

I have never really been down on Nasri, but does anyone think that possibly, just possibly, Mancini got in his head so much he just couldn't or didn't want to play with him. He was smiling all game, even before the first goal. He is playing with heart that up until last month I never saw in him.

His little flick to kolarov was class.
Seems to be enjoying his game much more under pelligrini, I am sure his form will continue now.
