NFL in London / 39th Game

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

NFL in London / 39th Game

Postby Blue Since 76 » Sun Sep 29, 2013 1:11 pm

Been thinking about this when I heard about the game in London today and from previous visits and then saw Ross's excellent post building on John's comments about where football's heading.

Rather than bring that up there, I thought I'd start a new topic, as this isn't directly about City or football, but is a question for our colonial guests across the pond. The football related stuff can therefore sit in the other topic and this is more about the impact on other sports?

Have any of your NFL/Baseball teams been involved in these overseas games yet and how did you feel? What is the general feeling in America about games being played abroad?

When the idea of the 39th game in the PL came up, football fans kicked up a fuss and I think that was the reason for bringing it up. An extra game would never work, as it would be unfair for a relegation candidate to have to face a top 4 team 3 times, whilst another got a mid table side. The answer therefore is either play off finals, like the lower leagues or rugby league (ideal, as would be away from home anyway, albeit not quite as far as Asia etc) or play a regulation game abroad.

Due to the size of America and the area that most teams cover, I suspect there are few, if any, away fans at games. Moving one therefore only inconveniences the usual home supporters. But what's the view of those home fans?

There has been lot of talk about 18 games regular season in NFL and maybe team in London in the future. Just a sidenote.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Never mind the league, maybe they could spice the League Cup up by playing one or more of the ties (if not the whole round) abroad? The FA cup is more bankable, but the League Cup needs some love.

Eventually we will have all the big teams of Europe, or the world, playing each other in a super club league competition, but they won't necessarily play home and away games, they will play wherever the most money is.

What ever you think of the sport, I have to say they know how to put on a show and the detail they go to is fantastic. I was working on the stadium on Thursday and was very impressed with how they go about things thats for sure.

Is this the ***OFFICIAL*** unfunny and time-worn comments about US sports thread? If so, it's lacking six stars.

That's the beauty of sports. You are free to choose what you watch.

No, it was a serious question about how people in America feel about their 'home' games being played 6,000 miles away, which probably makes attending a bit difficult. Seems relevant considering the other thread about where football is heading.

18 games regular season isn't happening now. They have decided to go in a new direction. There is still talk of shortening the preseason but now expanding the playoffs instead of the regular season. There has been talk of expanding into 3 other countries England, Mexico and Canada. The first two could happen the third is a lot more difficult. Canada already has its own league. The NFL would have a tough time entering into any of the major markets there.

I think it's a joke that a regular season game is played in London.
