Which is why you can't play Yaya in a two man midfield. Wonder if Pellegrini will ever realise it?

Fernandinho wasn't the issue, having two in midfield against three top class players was. Especially when Yaya didn't look arsed.

Go back and watch the derby again and you will see what he can do when it's 2v2 in the middle of the park. He was superb.

Short memories.

I recon they effectively had 6 in midfield last night, then just pushed the whole thing up into our half so the 'midfield' was effectively 20 yards from our box. Fantastic to see, having never seen Pep's Barca in the flesh, but this is arguably better, because they are faster, harder & more athletic than Barca.

Fernandinho looked like someone who understood what was happening & was quite capable of dealing with it. His team mates didn't.

Edit: there was a moment in the 2nd half when Fern, realising that Bayern had got a bit tired, went to collect the ball from Joe Hart IN SPACE. Hart being thick as fucking pig shit, fucked him off & lumped it up to Bayern. Moron.

Spot on. I called the 6 v 4(and our 4 are mostly attacking midfielders) in the match day thread before the game even started. So naive from Pelligrini, who i blame clearly for last night. Same tactics and formation in every game this season, pep would of watched us and rubbed his hand sit was so easy knowing in advance what we would do.

Fair comment but for me the test is for the next game we play v Bayern.

I can understand him thinking we are much better than Malaga etc & our 'wonderful' players like Yaya & Aguero will step up & keep the ball, run their balls off tracking back & foil Pep's plan.

Now he has seen the reality.

Everyone knows what happened, even Jamie Redknapp knew when I saw the aftermatch stuff late last night. So we will find out what the Count is made of when we play them next & whether there is anything more to him than one system.

The bizarre thing is that the U19s played like Bayern & Marwood, Vieira, Khaldoon, Soriano were all there shaking hands with them as they came off the pitch as if to say 'this is what we are talking about'.

Then the 1st team plays like Kevin Keegan is in charge.

The 'holistic' axe can not be far away if that continues.

You're right, there was six in and around midfield. I more so meant that centrally it was 3 (Kroos, Schweinsteiger, Lahm) v 2 (Fernandinho, Yaya) so we were on a hiding to nothing from the word go.

It wasn't just Hart lumping it either, Kompany's lack of composure when clearing the ball really pissed me off in the first half. We just kept giving the ball back to them too cheaply. Not to mention the numerous offsides when we did get into the final third.

Bayern were superb but we made things more difficult for ourselves and, specifically, the likes of Fernandinho who were left chasing shadows for 90 minutes.

This.

I have been nothing but impressed with him this season. He is doing the running of two men in that midfield and when I was watching us play Villa at Villa Park last weekend he stood out a mile. Calm, composed, clever, decisive, I could see what had our scouts raving about him.

If fingers are to be pointed they should be pointed firmly at Yaya, he is more than happy to let Ferna do his donkey work and that isn't on really. Yaya can get away with it against the likes of Villa but against Bayern, he will and we were found lacking.

I have to say he looks like a player whos starting to find his feet. His last few performances have been much improved, hope it continues. That bit of tracking back today was typical of his attitude, great work rate.

Hate to be negative after a really good game, but as a coach myself I found myself screaming don't dive in at the Telly all night. He must have attempted an unnecessary tackle and been beat a good 12 times. Poor technique.

Absolute horsehit. He was not beaten in the tackle that much at all. Fernandinho seems to be the guy to pick on now, maybe because Nasri and Kolarov are playing well.

To me Fernandinho seemed to pick up space well and spread the ball, he seemed to be the only one closing down the Everton players late in the game when Silva and Yaya were wrecked but dont mistake this for diving in, there was just no one else with his energy and commitment. Give him another few months and he will control our midfield

1st of all drop the absolute horseshit at very much.

2nd go back and look, its there for all to see. Now did he get beat as last man or leading to open shots? No, but he did get beat repeatedly in the middle of the park.

Spot on PBL.

I thought Fernandinho did have one of his better games yesterday, but he dives in quite a lot and the Everton players were able to get past him in the middle as you said. He's definitely going to be a yellow/red card risk in most games this season.

To give him credit, he did seem more disciplined yesterday in playing a more deeper role and not pushing up too much, so the gap between midfield and defence wasn't as big as in previous games. However, it is going to take him time to grow into the role, which again makes getting rid of Barry one of the most stupid things we've done in recent years.

Thought he played well yesterday. Yes he dives in but he's slowly learning.
If he was paired with someone who just sits in front of the back four, I think we'd see the best of him.

I think some of us fail to recognise the sheer volume of work his role in the team requires. Plus, I don't think he's fully attuned to the way we play football in this country yet. Given time I think he'll be fantastic (he's already very good).
