This season we have conceded 11 goals and scored 21 (+10). Last season, at this point, we had conceded 9 and scored 18 (+9). The PL winning season we had conceded 7 and scored 33 (+26!).

Last season we had 21 points from 9 games, 16 from this. The PL winning season we had 25 points from 9, this season, well, you know the score.

The last time we had similar points to this was when we first made the CL (17 points) the start of the season under Leslie (18 points). Prior to that we started the first 9 with 13 points.

Yes. No stand-out teams like in previous seasons so this one will have many twists and turns before the picture becomes clearer. When I say no stand-out teams, there is one but they're intent on making things interesting with some slapstick goalkeeping/defending.

When all said and done and the way the Prem is panning out 80 - 82 pts could be enough to win it this year maybe ?

I'd say low-80s the way things are looking, mate.

Not a great start points wise but arguably playing better this year than last. No comparison to 11/12 though. As we all know silly errors have cost us. If and it appears to be a big if, these are eliminated, we have got the quality to go on a long winning run as we can beat everyone.

Don't forget that we has a bad spell during our title winning season as well. From the Chelsea game in December to the Everton game in January we also only picked up 16 points from 9 games. There's still time to turn it around in other words...

We were out of the title race by Christmas last year, although some didn't know it.

I recon we'll be well in it at Christmas this year.

Correct. I also thought that horrible loss against rags signalled the end. By xmas we can be no more than 6 pts behind or i think it'll be a bridge too far especially if we are still in league cup and champs league

I'm not sure about that at all.

7 points behind Ferguson's Utd with a worse fixture schedule, like last season, is likely to be curtains but 6 behind Chelsea or Arsenal is nothing. I'd still give us a decent chance 12 behind.

The way things are going we might put that to the test. Big Jan transfer window beckons i think. A couple of good signings could give everyone at club big lift

Difficult time to bring in players, especially as the rags need about 8 to get in the top 6.

Oh it is. Fully agree. We have to get a centre half, a left back & possibly a goalie from somewhere though. Casillias is one thats a good shout. Agger from dippers another

For those that don't want the real stats (that stand-up (against the PL)) don't look at them.

We'll smash them, I'm sure. We have to.

Here they are upto the end of October:

Beat: Southampton H 3-2, QPR H 3-1, Sunderland H 3-0, Swansea H 1-0, Fulham A 2-1, West Brom A 2-1

Drew:Liverpool A 2-2, Stoke A, 1-1, Arsenal H, 1-1

Cups: Lost Real Mardrid A 3-2, Drew Dortmund H 1-1 lost Ajax away 3-1.

Lost, lcup: A Villa H 4-2

Set the world on fire we did. Out of 2 cups but who cares ?

Then we drew at West Ham, & home to Ajax. 2 good home victories v Spurs & Villa. Drew at home to Real Madrid, drew 0-0 away to Chelsea, beat Wigan drew 0-0 at home to Everton, lost to Dortmund, then lost at home to Utd. 2 weeks later we lost to Sunderland & the rags were 7 points clear at New Year, with a much easier run in.

We were then a dead man walking until May, apart from the FA Cup.

I can see why you are all yearning for those heady heights.

I'll settle for being in the champs league & putting 4 past those cunts for now & see where we are at New Year.

Why let facts get in the way of an argument though...
Says it all. this time last season we were already out of 2 cups.
And I also maintain we were out the race after Christmas. You know after New year we closed the gap ONCE before they had won the title with 5 games spare. That was when they drew to Spurs at WHL. Apart from that though we let a distinctly average side win the title without putting up so much as a whimper.
And the worst part was that we were simply boring to watch last season especially away from home. There were times when watching us felt more like a chore.
The football this season has already been 1000 times better to watch.

Next two weeks will be interesting - rags have Spurs & Arsenal, Arsenal & Liverpool play each other. We have two very winnable games.

In two weeks the rags will either be out of it and Spurs and Arsenal will look like real contenders, or it will all have closed up and we'll be right in the middle of the pack, despite all the losses etc.

IF we play properly in our two games, we should be no worse off than we are now and will have closed up on either Arsenal, Liverpool or both.

We can also make the last two CL games dead rubbers, meaning we can concentrate on the league games either side of them rather than resting players.

I think this is the answer, we need to finish this group right now and then tap into the squad depth for the last two, bring our actual advantage into play.
