We should still bid for the hobbit anyway to drive his price up.

Baines would be a great asset.

Not because he's a great defender (he's nowhere near as good as Clichy at his best imo) but because he is an average defender who can actually do the attacking stuff we require. Clichy is now below average defensively & useless producing the final ball & Kolarov is below average defensively, appears better than he actually is going forward, often plays the wrong final ball & he is slow.

The number of times City free the fullbacks in attacking positions, if we had one that was actually competent & clever at producing a final ball, we would go up yet another level.

Negredo would love Baines.

Edit: I too would prefer Coentrao, by a distance.

What's Coentrao like at defending? From the little I have seen of him he looks great going forward, tons of pace, good crosser but not sure about his defensive qualities

Imo, there are hardly any great defensive fullbacks. I recon he is as good as most.

Clichy's defending has been worrying this season, and seeing Torres skin him over 10 yards was the coup de gras.

Last night he again played way too far off his wide man, playing far too narrow in trying to support Nastasic. It also seemed he adopted the wrong position too often and seemed to lose where his man actually was. Id previously thought him a pacey full-back but he also seems to have lost a yard too.

It comes to something when you actually start thinking of Kolarov as the better option; though Im no Kolarov fan he has been the better player this season over the first 16 games.

Clichy reminds me of Micah in Hughes' first season, like a dizzy, drunk rabbit in the headlights. The difference is he's pushing 30 now so there's not much time for improvement. Once his pace starts to go he's fucked.

He was one of the better players during the Mancio period and now I really don't understand what happens to him!

I never thought he was this good; Baines and Cole were always a class above, but he was like Zabba, very dependable. Maybe he benefitted by being better than Kolarov.

I would definitely splash out for Baines, sound defender, great crosser, would upset rags no end and shut people up about no Englishmen in the team.

It speaks volumes when Kolarov is now probably our best left back. Both full backs, Clichy and Zabba have been below par this season with no discernable reason. Maybe Zabba getting married. Maybe Clichy getting mauled in cup final. Maybe Pellers is asking them to play different style both defensively with the higher line and offensively. Zabba in particular hasn't had Milner covering. Whatever the reasons i feel Clichy is on borrowed time and unless he gets his shit together i think a left back in January sales is on cards

If we rely on Nasti and Kolarov to protect the left side we are fucked.

neither are mobile which is Clichy's best asset. He was double teamed regularly last night which limits the options for either holding sensible space or going in tight. I think Clichy is still good enough but needs some stability around him so he can anticipate the game in both directions.

He was injured and came back abit shit not to mention Kolarov was playin quite a few games. Maybe just needs time to settle. I'm more concerned with zabba, bombing forward but defensively not half as good last season.

Perhaps Zabba on the left (he is after all the best left back at the club), and Micah on the right for A few games would be an option

It's true that Kompany improves the whole back line; but to compete at the top level consistently we need at least three of the back five to be top class on their own right, not one.
