Actually more excited with the England squad now adays then I have been for a long. Good prospects coming through such as Townsend, Barkley and Wilshire, and I'm interested to see how Lallana and Rodriguez take to the international stage after producing the goods week in week out for their team. Better then some of the crap we've had in recent years.

We shouldn't rule ourselves out of doing well this summer. There's always a few surprises. South Korea reached the semis in 2002 whilst Ghana were a missed 120th minute penalty away from reaching the semis in 2010.

What a set of fiddling bastards they were. I'd sooner my country go out in the group stages with integrity than cheat my way to the semi, thanks.

I am with Wonderwall on this one. On both counts.

What about Greece in 2004? Guarantee many people would have laughed off any chance of them reaching the semis, never mind winning it.
Nice to know you have so much faith in our country. In the 2006 world cup and euro 2012 and 2004 we reached the quarters and were knocked out on penalties.
In other words we were only a penalty shootout away from reaching the semi finals which would be a great achievement.
In all likeliness we won't win it though we probably won't get close. But reaching the quarters would represent a good tournament.

There's always a surprise team in a tournament. Why can't it be us? Football's full of surprises.
Sorry for having a bit of optimism you miserable fuck.
Or are you one of these people who are 'too cool' to give a shit about the national team?

And I've also noticed as soon as Kolarov started playing well, you went awfully quiet on that matter. Despite you saying you never wanted to see him play another game for us. Typical.

Not too cool whatsoever, just a realist. Always want england to do well but I am not stupid enough to get excited about it. Englands squad is severely lacking in quality. Checkout argentina, spain and belgiums squads and see how many of our english superstars would get into their best 11.

With regards to kolarov , he has been the biggest improvement in our squad by far this season. Credit where it is due, if you watch closely I dont have favourites who are immune from criticism. If you play crap, expect criticism.

Cheers mr miserable fuck

So you criticized me for having faith in our national team? Well sorry then. And yes I do get excited about it. World cups are the pinnacle of football imo (others may disagree) and I love how the whole country (well most of it) comes together to support the team.

I'm excited about the current set up because imo we have some genuinely talented youngsters coming through for the first time in years which is refreshing to see. They're not world beaters no, but good enough for us to get to the 1/4 finals imo which would represent a successful tournament. And if we do get to the quarters who knows what will happen? We were only a penalty shootout from knocking Italy, a vastly superior side out last time. Our penalty shootout nightmare has to end sometime.

And you can say how many English players would get in any of the top squads, but how many of Greece's 2004 squad would have got in the top teams in that competition? Probably less.
There's usually a surprise team who does better than expected (not talking about winning, just performing better than expected) . Maybe, just maybe one year it will be us?

Maybe it won't and we'll go out in the group stages but ffs have a bit of optimism rather than writing off our chances 7 months before the fucking tournament has even started.

The shit teams that have done well have basically known they were shit and managed to find a way of having their teamwork raise them above the sum of their parts. The problem with the 'old guard' England players is that they were so scared shitless of a bad performance harming their 'image rights' they could never fully rely on each other, so we sent out team after team of individuals playing for their next shampoo endorsement. Maybe it's time to give some other players a chance, ones with nothing to lose who can have a go and possibly inspire a few good team performances. I can live in hope (which is what mister left foot seems to be getting at) but without any blind optimism or unreal expectation.

Exactly mate. And being city fans should have taught us to live in (sometimes blind) optimism. We have more up and coming players then we have had recently. And anything can happen in a cup competition. Wigan won the fa cup Ffs! Sunderland beat us at the weekend! In all likeliness we'll go out in last 16 or quarters. But let's not fucking write off our chances before the tournaments begun.

You really are stupid. Take what being a city fan has taught you and use it wisely. England are shit. This new talent you speak of are nothing more than average and nothing to get excited about.

You really are a miserable fuck. I said we can make the quarters, which we have done in 4 of our last 6 major tournaments. In 3 of them we've gone out on penalties. We were only a penalty shootout away from knocking vastly superior sides out. Some time we'll win a shootout.
And surprises do happen.
And yes, being a city fan and watching some of the shite who played for us should have taught you the values in being an optimist. Even during the fucking pearce 10 goal at home season. It's the only way to cope sometimes.
I can't stand your fucking pessimism. Saying 'we don't have a prayer'. A prayer of what? Wining, yes we don't really barring a miracle. But getting to the quarters? I think we have a 'prayer' for that.
Make it through the group stages and see what happens. Anyone can beat anyone in a one off game.
Yes, they are, Townsend looks like a really good prospect, as does Wilshire, as does Oxlade Chamberlain. Sturridge also. Players like Lallana and Rodriguez have shone this season so far too.

However I have no doubt if England do manage to perform better than expected, you'll be out there celebrating with the rest of us, pretending like you've supported them all along.
None of them are world class but they're definitely better than what we've had coming through in the past.
Maybe you'll be right about this like you were about Kola... Oh wait.

They might well do, but it wont be at Football.

Perhaps in one of those other sports where you label the winners "World Champs" even though only America, Canada & Japan play it any half-decent level?

England are bang average and overrun with scum players. I no longer care how they do and care even less for the media inquests afterwards, which now verge on self parody.

And you cease to participate in a debate... surprise surprise.
I agreed with you, we don't have a prayer of winning it, barring a miracle, but we do have a decent chance of making the quarters. What's ridiculous about that statement?

Call yourself a fan eh...
In our only other previous debate about Kolarov, you turned out to be the fucking plank.

I don't actually know what your issue is here. I said i'm more excited about this squad then I have been about previous ones. What's your problem with that?

Cease to debate what exactly, you are slagging me off and then agreeing with me. Then you want everyone to get behind the arsene wenger mindset you are adopting that 1/4 finals is like a trophy whoop whoop lets all get excited at getting out of the group phase against some 3rd world countries.

What a complete knobjockey you are. Lauding yourself as a fan and me as not (I would like to understand your theory of me not being a fan!!!). Have you not noticed that your debates are mind numbingly stupid and people would rather ignore you than debate wit you because you are an imbecile.

And yes I am excited about the world cup. I always am. Without a doubt the greatest football tournament in my opinion. And if you can't get excited for it, it's your loss.
Yes quarter finals would be a good achievement. We don't have a right to demand more. There are far better teams than us. However, saying that, anything can happen in a one off game. Anything. No one is unbeatable. 3rd world countries? That doesn't even deserve a response.

I think you have proven me right with several examples in this thread

Bridge'srightfoot wrote:And yes I am excited about the world cup. I always am. Without a doubt the greatest football tournament in my opinion. And if you can't get excited for it, it's your loss.

I really enjoy the world cup and have never said otherwise, I watch a hell of a lot of the games and enjoy them.

Pathetic? OK if you say so sunshine. You mr "we have got a chance to reach the 1/4 finals, lets get the bunting out". If you note back on the thread, I have said I always want England to do well, however, I am not the thick cunt that thinks we might have a chance, you never know eh..... Its called being REALISTIC not PESSIMISTIC, you fucking clown. I can see you now screaming at the TV in ecstasy with your Rooney England Top on as we hammer Iran 1-0.
