On this occassion I don't think it's Hart's fault. Unlike last time, Joe is screaming to Smalling that it's his ball and there was nobody infront of him so he could've chested it and passed it out. Smalling, who's had a very poor game, and is still relatiely inexperienced, seemed to get pushed into it or just didn't listen to Joe.

He doesn't need to clear the ball though. The only thing he can do there is head it and him heading it is far more risky then allowing the centre back to simply head it back to him. Smalling has it covered and If Hart stays on his line it's a simple header back. Really poor decision to come out and got lucky tonight.

To be fair. Townsend along with Hart and Jagielka were our best players, certainly in the 2nd half. Yes Townsend is dumb and unpredictable but thats part of why he is a good prospect. However, compare him to Reus and its Premier league v League 2

One thing you can say of Joe is that at least he made a decision when a lot of goalies would have hidden. Personally I would bring him back at weekend, cos if we don't commit soon we probably have to sell him and he's miles better than the other Spanish and Brazillian keepers being mentioned. To me Townsend is a revelation because no one at international level does what he does put his head down and go at full pace.. to me he was our best player by a mile. Sturridge was appalling but I still think he is a good option for us once he finds his feet at this level.My view is that Smalling, rough as he is, is better than Cahill, but as Ted says, why not go with lescott and Jagielka. Had we done so we would have got a draw tonight.Lescott must be fecking mad at the way he's being treated generally. On another note, surely we can put the liability that is Ashley Cole to bed and get on with bedding in a new left back. He has been sub standard for two years now.I thought we did reasonably well against potential world champions.

Perhaps Rooney plays deep enough to add to the midfield.

Personally think there's some absolute dross in the England set up and Walker, Cleverley, Smalling are the best examples. Totally fucking useless players who add very little to England.

I think i'm in the small minority that really doesn't rate Townsend either. He's just another fast winger that will get found out pretty quickly for being very one dimensional. He's fast but with little end product and we're all too familiar with that type of player as England produce a lot of them. There is no way Townsend is ever gonna make a difference at a high level. Yeah he'll play well against a Finland or some other dross, but against a good team? Very little chance. He does a nice dribble here and there but nowt tends to come from them. I'll give it a year or so before every realises he's no more than a decent impact sub.

I personally like Lallana - i think he's technically good and I think his movement is excellent. He could link up with the better technical players such as Sturridge and Rooney pretty well. Gerrard is just okay these days. Not awful, but not great. Him and Lampard don't really have long left in this squad and i'd honestly not be arsed if they were both phased out pretty sharpish. Barkley's got potential, as do a lot of the u21s. We need someone who can actually confidently collect the ball from the defence and actually dictate play. We have no one who can do that. The best english player around at the moment who can do that is Gareth Barry, but his days are long gone.

I think Ashley Cole cemented Leighton Baines place in the starting line up last night. what utter dross, he was awful apart from the nice backheel that came off, he tried it again later in the game and gave away possession.

This has been the case for most of the past 40 years. England have been 'preparing' for tournaments, on the most part, that they had no chance in hell of winning, instead of trying to build a TEAM to win 'a' tournament in the future.

Each time we bum out apallingly, there is a huge inquest, probably a sacked manager, then the press pick the squad for the 'new era' which contains every single one of the 'star' players, who have just performed like complete cocks in the last tournament, plus most of their mates. Then the new manager picks the same bunch but adds someone who the last manager left out at long last, but the press were asking to be brought back. Off we go again.
