The problem with this system is further exemplified by the fact that 4 of the 5 lowest seeds in the competition are the 4 Asian teams, for whom it's almost impossible to pick up the points to rise significantly in the rankings, no matter how good they are.

Actually, on the basis of that article and facts, one could argue that Australia (rankings-wise, at least) have been disadvantaged by the switch to the Asian confederation, as their heavier qualifying schedule prevents them from playing friendlies (plus Confederations Cup matches every 4 years) against teams that would earn them more ranking points.

However, when it comes to World Cup groups, rankings are factored-in with geographic location by some group who've been given top-notch hospitality by sponsors, which'll almost definitely influence the balance between the two. And the rankings, unless you're top seeds, are pretty meaningless.

I predict the pots to be as follows:

Pot 1: The 8 Seeds
Pot 2: Next 8 best from UEFA
Pot 3: France, Chile, Ecuador, 4x CONCACAF, Ivory Coast
Pot 4: Rest of CAF + 4x AFC

Again let's accommodate France :D This is funny with this 9 teams in pot when we all know if France was not team who should go in pot 2 by FIFA list by the way, it would be normal draw. Can i guess who will finish in pot 2 , not France :D

It doesn't matter which pot is numbered as which, as only Pot 1 is seeded. The rest are to separate out the draw geographically.

Regardless of our draw our campaign will go like this:

First match - A lucky draw against a better side.
Second match - The suspended Rooney is replaced by Defoe. We lose 2-0
Third game - We need to beat the group minnows to qualify. We win 1-0

Second round - We have a winnable game on paper, but Brazil or Portugal await if we win. We lose 4-0

Have I missed some rule change, but how the fuck are Switzerland seeded. I understand they may be ranked 9th in the world, but as England have proved over the years, the rankings are startlingly easy to manipulate if you pull in the right sort of friendly games.

I understood in the past that seedlings were based on performance in finals competitions, which would surely have seen the Netherlands as a more worthy seed than Switzerland. Seeding Switzerland stinks to high heaven of finding a way to give someone an easy group.......and what money it ends up being France?

I also don't understand how the fuck Belgium got in there ahead of Netherlands, beaten finalists 4 years ago, AND have a lower FIFA ranking.

I nearly asked "do they just make it up as they go along"...... Well of course the fucking do

As I understand it, ranking works like conkers in that you get a bigger score for beating better teams in meaningful matches. Along side their successful qualifying campaign, they're probably still dining out on having beaten Spain in that SA 2010 opener.

Thanks, wasn't aware of the article. But I've read it now, and see the rankings were taken from October (oddly ignoring the rankings today which are quite different) and am still fairly sure that in the past the seeding was based on finals history.

I actually prefer this as it gives more chance of seeing different teams progress, and I'm really excited to see how Belgium do with their young team, but it seems like its open to a spot of tampering by national FAs, and also means in a World Cup year, the minnows are likely to only get friendlies with other minnows if the FAs are switched on to the implications (which clearly the Dutch weren't)

There is a multiplier coefficient for finals of confederation and World Cup finals, as the article mentions. Otherwise you may be getting confused with the UEFA coefficient: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_coefficient

England have zero chance of winning and hence we should just enjoy the fact we are there, see what the draw brings, and take it.

Tbh, England are that average that any of the other 31 teams looks a tough tie for us, honestly. If we get out of the group, that will be an achievement for this group of players and manager, but to hope for anything else is sheer folly.

Yep I think this is probably what will happen, at best. Equally likely is for us to go out at the group stage too.

I'm just happy we will be there so there is someone to support (along with Japan) to keep things interesting. We have absolutely no chance of winning the tournament though, and I've no problem with that.

Once Rooney retires I'm going to find it far easier to get behind the England team I think. As childish as that is, I know.
