Is this what has fucked Joe Hart up; trying to emulate people such as Neuer rescuing slow defenders by effectively playing sweeper but he's getting it slightly wrong ?

I've just mentioned Muller's goals v us in the Arse game thread, but when we hit a similar ball past that useless Brazilian sack of shite in Bayern's defence for Navas, Neuer was there to stop us scoring the same goal.

It wasn't calm or unflustered, it was touch & go, but he took one look at that big loaf v Navas & was straight out there to the rescue.

Is Joe actually trying to do something which would save our defenders on many occasions, but misjudging it ?

If so, are we right to scare him off from doing it again, or should we encourage it ?

Would Bayern now be 2nd in the group if Neuer hadn't done it last night ?

His strength is shot stopping but people go on and on about "his ability to play with his feet". Guy is a fucking goalkeeper.

I can confirm that City want their keepers at all levels of the club to pretty much play as a 5th defender. The keeper has to be an outlet and has to be able to play from the back. This is what we have been doing in the women’s team for a few weeks and am lead to believe that this also goes through the junior ranks up to the seniors.

I think he has to be a sweeper of sorts. not that he has to be rushing out of his goal every time they attack, just to be aware and be off his line quickly if needed. When we play a high line, anything dropping 30 yards from the goal is our keepers to come and clear

I think 'misjudging' is putting it nicely. Its one thing when a keeper comes out when he's the last man but it's another when his defender has it covered and he comes out to challenge his own player for the ball. I don't want to see hart storming out his goal. He has more chance of saving the one on one.

Yeah it is in the way we were doing it last night. I have never ever none so much emphases on the keeper being a huge part in the play. We were asked the question last night, who is the player that is never marked and a constant outlet……the keeper. This is what we were having drilled into us last night and I have never touched a ball so much with my feet.

For me personally its great as I love the ball at my feet and can play a bit, I can imagine some keepers though will hate it, The days of keepers just punting it as far away from goal are long gone and the days of keepers just being there to keep the ball out of the net are gone also. They need to be able to play ball and have a good range of passing ability.

Neuer's kicking was rubbish last night, he made Joe look like Pele at the other end.

Funnily enough, Lloris who's regarded as the best 'sweeper keeper' in the PL, his kicking was also shit against us leading to two goals, maybe whatever Joe has is contagious.

It's a problem when taking into account that some players are a bit thick or just have poor judgement/concentration/awareness. I was annoyed a season or so ago when someone tried passing it to the keeper from close to the halfway line and a greyhound of a striker latched onto it before it had even got to the penalty area (to thankfully mess his shot up and put it into the crowd)

You know what, I watched the city Tottenham 3-2 the other day, he was doing the same back then. He rushed out fucked up the clearance and left Defoe with an empty net. That was the best part of three years back I believe.

It possibly makes more sense in a way than the emphasis on centre backs being great passers, because the keeper is their outlet under pressure who can pass it long, short, whatever, often with more time to decide, & can also be their saviour in situations like last night. I know at City kids' level the keepers can sometimes be seen passing the ball around in their own penalty area, cool as fuck!

I wonder if this will become a bigger thing when picking keepers in the coming years, like when they changed the backpass rule, & some top keepers became a potential liability because they couldn't pick the ball up & were shit at kicking.

A keeper with dirty feet has no place at a top club, first touch and pass are a given now, sweeping /spotting danger should be part
of a keepers game from being a kid, Esssential now, that is why they are spotted, most kids are keepers by chance, Hart just complicates his game with a cocks attitude at times. Take yourself back Ted to Madrid away, he did not have the brains to kill the game at 2-2. He needed a wake -up and Pellers has given him that, I would not mind him back in if he going to listen learn and not mess up.
