both his cheekbones crushed in separate incidents and nose broken many times. I always thought he was a very decent prem player... not the most skilled, but reliable. He was definitely a grafter, and us americans love that. I still don't think the US has produced a more reliable front man than him, actually.

Surprised no one has mentioned Edin Dzeko. He can control a header better than most imo. His goal against Spurs in the 5-1 where the ball was nearly behind him but he arched his neck to plant a wonderful header and wrong foot the keeper was brilliant. He's scored a few like that also. He's not likely to score a thumping header like Drogba but his technique is superb.
Our best striker in the air imo.

Demichelis doesn't have the best technique in the world (or even in our current team), but he's great at timing his runs and beating his man at corners. We've scored quite a few where he has gone for the first post.

Dave headed the ball harder than anyone I've ever seen. I remember one of his headers from a corner against Ipswich which hit the back of the net like a volley. But I'd have to go with Denis Law, probably because his headers tended to end in the net. I remember a game he played for us when he dived down to head the ball up into the ROOF of the net from about 12 yards. Best headed goal I've ever seen.

When I used to watch bury, Kenny Clements never seemed to lose a header. He was otherwise wank, but very good with his napped.

I know that this doesn't specifically answer your query but he has averaged a headed goal every 6.3 games, a lower average than any other premier league player.

Great runs will get you in the area, but you have to be a great header to top the list.

I remember when he came back with Notts County & we had McCarthy; they just spent 90 mins heading the ball over the halfway line.

I don't personally think these guys compare with the likes of Royle though, simply because they were about jumping & power, wheras Joe had the power, tge jump & could pass a ball with his head better than Garcia can with his feet.

John Charles, Alan Gilzean, Tony Hateley (father of Mark), Wynn + Ron Davies, Jeff Astle and Derek Dougan are the 60s players that immediately come to mind though I don't remember seeing John Charles play. Defensively Jack Charlton, Ron Yeats, Roy McFarland and Tommy Booth ruled the roost.

A bit later came those 2 ugly scots that joined scum from Leeds + Andy Gray, Dave Watson, Terry Butcher, Malcolm McDonald (and Ted McDougall who turned out to be shit when scum bought him from John Bond's Bournemouth).
