Remarkable achievement to get Bolton that much in debt, when you look at the players they have had.

Nothing to do with Fat Sam's legacy of course, in the same way that Harry The Dog, isn't in any way responsible for any of the clubs which ended up bankrupt a while after his tenure.

I always seem to remember this guy pushing hard for FFP, and if FFP itself now attacks them when they are at their weakest point its exactly what he deserves. After all he wanted it and voted for it.

They had debt but i think Whelen always seemed to manage the club with a view that they'd get relegated - Martinez always foiled his plans ;-)

Part of me thinks its a shame as they are a proud old club with a long tradition and history. They've been down before, even playing in old 4th Division and they have recovered. This time it looks extremely serious as losses are even more than turnover with no realistic way of improving turnover. Indeed it will get far worse when parachute payments cease. Administration looms.

On the other hand. You reap what you sow. Gartside was a vociferous advocate of FFP and all it entailed. He will have dragged his club further into the mire with this policy. I also have little sympathy with clubs who overspend and live beyond their means. They are a business when all is said and done and live and die by their business decisions. If by paying high wages and inflated transfer fees they aspire to improve as a club by the way of better results and this fails then the club has to suffer the consequences. See Leeds, Portsmouth, Rangers, Coventry to name but 4. There have been many others and there will be more in the future, (please let the Glazers do it to the rags).

Zero sympathy from me i'm afraid

Trying to maintain a Premier League budget in the second tier - you reap what you sow mofos. No sympathy whatsoever. Gartside for the sack for financial incompetence.

They should start worrying about liquidation right now, because administration is a dead certainty with those types of figures being bandied about. Unless they sneak a playoff place and are promoted this year.

I guess we now know why Gartside was so desperate for the top tier to be frozen with no relegation. I don't imagine that's his current position.

I've got plenty of sympathy for the proper Bolton fans. They've been up and down with their club and deserve better.

No sympathy whatsoever for those who run the club: they have brought it upon themselves.

Well put TB, Gartside always woind me up as he was more often than not derogatory towards us as a club. I have a couple of mates who are Bolton season ticket holders and they are great lads so it's a shame for them.

According to North west tonight the majority of their debt is in the form of a loan from the owner Eddie Davis. The amount of the loan is 150 million which they have 9 years left to run on it.

Interesting to see how a club with a turnover of £28m (including £16m parachute payment), plan to repay even the interest on that debt when the parachute payment ends and turnover drops way below £20m. They certainly won't be paying any capital back unless they borrow from somebody else, or he writes it off.

I don't see how Bolton's total assets are worth that much, so surely the club is already technically insolvent?

I can't understand how their turnover can be so low. Isn't Championship TV money about 3 million? That'd mean that gate receipts, sponsorship and merchandise (am I missing another source of income here?) would total about 9 million. Okay, they lost a lot of money by taking the (rightfully so, imho) moral route and declining a sponsorship deal with legal loan sharks QuickQuid after fan and community protests, losing a significant wad of cash by being sponsored by a commercial research branch of Bolton Uni, but even so, I'd expect sponsorship (in all its forms - corporate, billboard, main & junior, etc.) to be at least several million a season. Add bums on seats at a minimum of approx. 4-5 million a season (assuming 10,000 fans paying 20 quid each for 23 home games, plus the occasional cup game) and merchandise in all its forms, and I really don't see these figures being right...

Collectively they had a lot to say when we were shite. Not much sympathy here.
