Resting Players is there any need?

Postby gillie » Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:06 am

With the possibility of 10 games in 36 days coming up do we need to really rest our best players.I ask this only because when I played football in my much younger days we were always told the best way to keep fit is to play. With so many games in such a short period surely the need for training will become secondary. What i mean is full contact training should'nt really be needed just light running drills and tactical scenarios for each different opponent.Am I wrong?

I used to ride my push bike to school every day, I fail to see why the Tour de France doesn't go for 365 days a year.

Gillie, its not just fitness, its injuries as well, anyone with a slight injury who could play every 7 days and it would right itself with a rest during the week is unable to recuperate. It needs managing correctly. Also there is a psychological part to this, its a daunting task they face and if they are starting to feel tired, their brains will start to tell them to rest etc...

Its not purely letting them train a little less to compensate for energy used.

There is a need to rest players as they are playing at the highest level and any slight tiredness is noticeable. 72 hours is minimum tome between games players need to fully recover and then be ready again to perform at their peak. It doesn't matter as much a local level. You do need to play to keep match fit but too many games will cause burnout.

it's a well known fact that no player has ever been injured whilst training

Some very good replies that answer the question here, but I do kind of see where gillie is coming from. It's certainly over done in some instances and can frustrate supporters when it backfires.

That being said I don't think pellers has over done it as no youngsters can gets sniff and even the likes of Milner aren't getting the game time they deserve. If anything I think he's guilty of trying to go for cricket scores when he could rest stars and blood youth.

It's a science with proven results & we saw the pitfalls of ignoring it when Zabba was played at a time he shouldn't have been, when he had clearly been earmarked for a break but was played instead.

We can see it happening throughout the league now, because of all the games over the Christmas period. Players are picking up more injuries & some serious injuries. One stretch too many, 6 weeks out, also the fatigue element can effect decision making & the tiredness itself can cause injury; people lunging or stretching because they are tired/injured.

Walcott was an example of this; clearly tired, feeling a niggle & looking for a rest. Wenger should have taken him off but missed all the signs as usual. Result, Walcott over stretches & six months out.

Wenger is a turd in this area.

The Count does it al the time, but has missed a couple of opportunities & got both Aguero & Zabba injured imo as a result.

Mancini used to run Yaya & Gareth Barry into the ground, Barry became half the player when Mancini failed to rest him.

I too see where Gillie's coming from. I dont really see the different levels being an issue as they are fit to play at that level and I was fit to play at my level.

What I would say is when I had to play 3 times a week it was obviously right at season end, so there is an end point. Now it's mid season so it needs to be balanced more because it was actually very tiring (playing squash 7 days a week didn't help). If it's just week after week after week players will break down with something and we'll win bugger all!

One thing Ferguson did, was prove that this works.

Everyone used to have this argument, then Utd would be running all over them whilst they wheezed and coughed & limped their way up the pitch.

We saw it on many occasions, when they were fresh & we were fucked.

The reason managers do it, is because it's proven.

Well in our neighbourhood, the likelihood was the bike wasn't going to be there at the end of the day anyway.

Yes it is/was a serious question. What i would like to know is when did all this resting players start was it just in the Prem era because when i used to go to matches all the time in the 70s and 80s it very rarely happened and the pitches they played on were awful.

Games from that long ago weren't played at the same level of intensity they are these days, training wasn't as evidence-led (and was mostly made up as they went along), and the whole culture at the time meant minor injuries were seen as a sign of weakness so were ignored with players playing through the pain. These days even the slightest twinge could be a symptom of something that could develop into a multi-million pound-contract-threatening injury and is taken seriously.
