Next generation of Manchester United stars ready to assume the mantle
Sir Alex Ferguson has always trusted young players, but the exceptional current crop have left him with almost no option

Posted by
Daniel Taylor
Tuesday 23 August 2011 15.37 BST The Guardian

Phil Jones is a case in point, a 19-year-old who gives the impression he is in his 10th year at Old Trafford rather than his 10th week. Sir Bobby Charlton and Paddy Crerand, team-mates from the European Cup victory of 1968, found themselves talking last week and decided they had already seen enough of Jones to pay him what, in United terms, is probably the ultimate compliment. "If you talk to Bobby Charlton," Crerand says, "Phil Jones reminds him of Duncan Edwards with his power and build."

Then there is the emergence of Smalling – a player, like Jones, whose development means the Old Trafford crowd no longer needs to fret unduly about Ferdinand's injury problems. Plus the fact Rafael and Fábio da Silva, at the age of 21, did not even play on Monday. Anderson has already shown in flashes that he can have a productive season and, like Jonny Evans, is still young enough, at 23, to be regarded as promising. Ashley Young is 26, a year older than Wayne Rooney and two years older than Nani. Javier Hernández is another 23-year-old and could feasibly be at Old Trafford for the next decade.

Ferguson has been remarkably unselfish when it comes to putting into place a team that will still be around long after his tenure has ended. "We compete in the present but at the same time build for the future," he says. On both counts, United have reason for optimism.

Manchester United's Phil Jones: it's flattering to be compared with Duncan Edwards

As Phil Jones pulls up a chair beneath the black and white images of Manchester United’s youngsters from previous generations, it becomes impossible to avoid the elephant in the room.

By Mark Ogden

8:00AM BST 01 Oct 2011

A youthful Ryan Giggs dominates the backdrop, there are pictures of Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Gary Neville and, in the corner, a portrait of the Busby Babes with the imposing frame of Duncan Edwards standing out from the crowd.

“If you talk to Bobby Charlton,” says Paddy Crerand, Charlton’s team-mate in United’s 1968 European Cup winning team, “Phil Jones reminds him of Duncan Edwards with his power and build.”

Is Phil Jones the new Duncan Edwards?

When no less a judge than Sir Bobby Charlton talks about the striking similarities between Phil Jones and the late, great Duncan Edwards, you know United have secured a special talent.

Phil Jones destined for Manchester United folklore

Phil McNulty | 18:30 UK time, Sunday, 18 December 2011

Phil Jones was not even halfway through his day's work for Manchester United at Loftus Road when the latest lofty comparison landed on his head.

Everton's former Manchester United defender Phil Neville - tweeting in his guise as someone called @fizzer18 - announced that the 19-year-old had shown enough in a central midfield role in the 2-0 win to be placed in the same category as "a young Roy Keane."

The other half of the Neville brothers, Gary, says: "Jones has a touch of Bryan Robson or Roy Keane."

Jones can become an Old Trafford great, says Ferguson after versatile youngster helps guide United to 20th title

'Jones is going to be a phenomenal player,' said Ferguson.

'He has a fantastic influence, no matter where he plays.

'He has an instinct for the game and a drive about him.

'I have no idea where his best position is. He could play anywhere on the pitch. But he will be one of the best players we have ever had'

The transparent obsession here with youth kind of makes me feel uneasy..... Isn't that what Jimmy Saville did, hide in plain sight?

They had to do this kind of stuff with Ferguson to get any crumbs from his table. At least one of them still got banned for not towing the line I think.

I remember the Guardian article, and another one last year, I'm not sure in which paper, that went on about Fergie's legacy, and named a team of rags all under 24 (plus Rooney). I thought at the time that only a couple were decent calls for the future.

Well barring a bad injury, Januzaj is clearly going to be at least a decent, possibly a top Prem player. Pogba always looked as if he had something.

The rest of their recent academy players & Ferguson's pretend academy, young signings, are all squad players at best imo. An 11 created purely from them would go down.

Danny Taylor is one of the good guys. He's a very nice bloke. He's not the first and he won't be the last to write a gushing article about a big team. He also won't be the last to retrospectively think 'fuck me, i was so wrong'...

Jesus (not Navas this time)!! They really are clutching at straws!

Almost makes it sound like Phil Jones was born at the swamp! They fucking bought a player who had been playing in the prem for fuck sake and made 35 appearances for Blackburn after coming through their youth system!!!

Juzzinyoureye is the only promising thing they've bought young, the twins are fucking scandalous

This so called youth academy may have seen the likes of Scholes, Giggs, Rat faces 1 & 2 and Beckscum make their way through many years ago but since then its been a very small drip of putrid water as they've bought their way through for many years using thier vast finances just like any other top 4, 5, 6 club has but now shackled by the owners who have raped their coffers. They still find some cash to splash out 30+ million on players or close to that for one season on/one season injured players...

The way Ne**lle was talking on Sky yesterday sounded like he's been tipped off that the Glazers are going to put the debt back up next season & they'll spend a load of money, but even he thinks they'll struggle to attract the top ones.

They'll have to spend, as the so called 'legacy' consists of about 4 players, two of whom are Rooney & RVP.

They always do that. Smalling, Jones, Rooney, Zaha, Rafael and Fabio all bought from another team, all came through their academies. Made to sound in every fluff piece like they were delivered personally by Bacon himself.

Ben Amos, Michael Keane, Larnell Cole, Evans, Fletcher, Cleverly, Macheda and Januzaj are their products in the first squad.

Outside of Januzaj I can't see one player in there who'd get into any top 4 side, and he still has 2nd season syndrome to get through.

Laughable. It truly is. The club are lurching from one disaster to another both on and off the field. Neville was playing down the transfer window as he knows no decent player is likely to rock up and if he did Woodward would fuck it up. The claim that the money (£150m) is there because the rags tried to sign Bale & Fabregas last summer is fooling no one except the rags. The pot has been bled dry by uncle Malc.

Next thing they'll be claiming Gollum brought the likes of jismjazz through the ranks after personally overseeing their development. Long may this continue

Gary Neville (as good as he is on sky) has given up trying to defend the indefensible. He was starting to sound quite scathing yesterday. Wouldn't you distance yourself from that shit?

To be fair i think Neville is as much a rag fan as any of us is a City fan. He's in the envious position of having played for and captained his team in their most succesfull period ever. I believe his book was called united kids wife meaning the loves of his life? I imagine he'd defend his club to the hilt no matter what. I know i would, no matter how low we sink

Joey Barton is available for under 20 mil.

They have got masses of money with a huge annual turnover and marketing and matchday income. However Ferguson lead them to believe he had worked the oracle. He clearly hadn't and they are now up shit creak because if they don't make top four they'll never get players to go there. So they have to buy now over the odds and hope it works which is really fun to watch. However, we all know Mata is a fuckin good player, even at Aguero money, and him Rooney and Pussey with the kid will make them a decent team. However, even then, they might not make top four cos of the balls ups todate, and then we will see the real decline that Ferguson's mix of sycophantism to the owners plus old school stupidity has brought about.Think of it like this. You are the owner. You have seen United destroyed by Barca in the chumps final and then fail to reach the group stages. Give me a manager to win the champions league and put Barca, Bayerne and City in their places. Certainly Sir, I give you ........David Moyes! You couldn't make it up. More importantly, Ferguson will have known many of his players were shit but knew he was going to retire and wanted an easy life. Had he gone their 3 years ago he would have demanded expensive signings but not after twenty odd years. So despite their money, I think Moyes will take them down the pan.

I had a rag mate text me something similar a couple of months ago. Seems reasonable, as I can name quite a few myself - Ferdinand, Rooney, Van Persie, Jones, de Gea and Fellaini and that's just from the current side.

ha ha yeh, maybe there is confusion about "academy graduates" on their side...but anything to perpetuate myths seems ok with them and their media cheerleaders
