I will not get my hopes too high after what has happened in the past but I want to talk about the do we need him or not subject. Maybe on paper, as per traditions, philosophy, style etc. and whatever GN said, then NO. But times have changed and teams have to adapt to these variances. You can't rely on philosophy, traditions etc. Philosophy will give you Valencia or Ashley Young.. Showing intent will give you Juan Mata. Also lads, think about it, did Barcelona NEED Neymar? NO! Did Real Madrid need Bale? NO! Did Bayern need Thiago? No! Did Chelsea need Willian? NO! and these examples go on and on.. Such calibre players don't become available everyday and every window. You accomodate them, just like we did with RVP and look what happened with that. It would create a fantastic buzz withing the squad and give them a boost about the things that could happen ahead. For me, plain and simple, the guy is too good to turn down. Just do your best and get him in

But, however, after the shambles of the summer and the letdowns we've endured over the years, I'm not getting too excited about it.. just yet. I'm just stunned that Mourinho would seriously consider selling him in the first place. He's been their best player over the last two seasons as well and you only have to listen to the Chelsea fans views on it, and they aren't happy at all, and I'm not surprised. Mata is exactly the type of attacking playmaker/midfielder we've been crying out for over the past 4-5 years and he will strengthen us. He's an Ozil or David Silva type player and will create chances, many chances if you look at his record, something of which the likes of Young and Valencia just aren't capable of doing. My only concern is if this deal does happen, I wonder whether Rooney is going the other way next summer as part of the negotiations? For now though, a front four of RvP, Rooney, Mata, Januzaj/Kagawa would look very strong on paper. Could Moyes transform that onto the pitch? Let's hope he could. If he does sign, it'll be a big lift to not only the fans but the team as well. The signing of just one star player can make a big difference. Look at Ozil's impact for Arsenal and Van Persie's for us last season

prescott (Manchester United): Just read something that encourages me regarding the Mata signing. Chelsea are in a pretty dire position with regards to FIFA FairPlay, so a huge cash bid for a benched player would provide a good solution for them. RvP up top behind Rooney, Mata and Januzaj would be interesting to say the least. I actually think it's a genius move on Moyes behalf (credit where due) as the new formation would mean less reliance on our traditional wingers (who are all crap) and focuses on the defensive (see lack of offensive) skills from our current centre mids. With these four in attack, a pairing of Carrick and Fletcher/Jones would fulfil its role nicely. Another encouraging aspect is that AMC is not our biggest weakness, so if we have money for that position, it suggests we have a decent war chest. Good news all round and I hope Moyes et al pull it off.

Not at all saying we don't lack quality, but Moyes hasn't even utilized the quality we actually have. Like most United fans, I have no illusions or optimism in us getting Mata. But let us say we actually could get him. Then we should buy him. And we should utilize the trio of Mata, Kagawa and Januzaj behind that striker. But heck, we already have Januzaj and Kagawa - and he isn't utilizing the quality of Kagawa. After a promising game against Swansea in the no 10 role, a game that also showed Januzaj as better in a wider role, he goes back to Young and Valencia vs Chelsea. He has wasted Kagawa, so why would he do better with Mata? Now, not signing Ozil, that can be defended. Mata is after all proven to be very efficient in a more wider free role, while Ozil is a pure nr 10. But to use the reasoning of Kagawa and Rooney already playing in the role - AND ALMOST NEVER USE KAGAWA THERE - the man has been talking nonsense. We have a manager completely lacking visions, he is a conservative manager with conservative tactics.
