Having 'lost' £260M off their share price, it may bankrupt them too. They over stretched to buy RVP and are now in trouble. If they don't qualify for the Champions League their revenue stream will suffer massively, seriously disrupting summer business. That is why the will panic and try to buy Mata. He's not a player they really want, but they can't get the ones they do.

Here's a video of ratboy and carrager talking about what the rags getting mata means. I think carrager is right - that if they buy Mata for 35+ mil, he has to play. And to play him, the rags have to either 1) change their system and go without true wingers or 2) sell shrek/rapist in the summer.

Either way, I'm not too worried if he did go there. The rags need a defensive and midfield overhaul. Adding an (overpriced imho) attacking center mid will use up a large part of their transfer budget on a non-key area.

Their wingers are shit anyway, so they might just drop them. Shrek will probably off next summer.

how great would it be though for Mourinho to tempt the rags with Mata, only to pull the deal at the last hour, as a "fuck you" for not selling shrek over the summer... leaving the rags with just a bunch of meaningless "bids" and no time to get an actual class player

It doesn't matter if they buy Mata. If the lose tonight , the best they can hope for is CL quali and that is looking more remote by the day.

Europa league revenues are not enough

Also, despite others , i do not think Mata would bring much to their midfield.

Rag fans getting really excited about mata!!
City buying the league, even though 40 mil for a player is ok. Hope they get knocked out tonight and it all falls through

Mata is better than anything they have and is what they are desperately missing, I think its a good buy if they get him. £40m is a lot of the budget for a team without European footy next year

I thought third party ownership wasn't allowed. Wasn't that what the whole Tevez / Hammers affair was about?

Thanks! Still I don't really get why you would need a third party to do your deals for you... surely a club if their stature must have people on their books qualified to handle transfers like this.

As I said earlier, they don't think Woodward and Gollum will be be taken seriously.

No but it's a great name for a comedy duo. Or a firm of funeral directors.

He's a defender & centre mid?

They need to replace Ferdinand/Vidic/Evra. Their midfield consists of Carrick, Fellaini, Cleverley & part-timer Fletcher.

On top of that their wingers Young, Valencia & Nani are erratic, but their answer is to spend 40m on a position where they have Rooney, Kagawa & Januzaj? Desperately missing my arse.

They dont have a decent playmaker, a David Silva type, Mata is that and they need creativity.

I agree though they need quality all over the place, they are an ageing team and being found out now.

Reckon the first we'll hear about a transfer is when the fella is paraded in a City shirt with all the hacks scratching their heads muttering amongst themselves, 'where the fuck did that come from'.
