It's more or less totally irrelevant often. There are more average/shit players than great ones though so the chances are the vast majority of managers will appear to be formerly average footballers....and most great players don't go into management cos they've already made their millions and settle into cushy pundit jobs or something.

I think it's simpler than that. Footy comes naturally to the greats, so they never need to become tactics-heads to fulfill their potential.

Players like Barry and Carrick, on the other hand, probably take tactics and discipline very seriously and you can imagine them making good coaches.

Nasser Hussain in his autobiography made a similar point about Ian Botham: he was so talented that cricket was instinctive and he never developed the brain of a good coach or selector.

I think SOME of the top ex players who do have managerial talent, expect their squad to have the ability to think & play like they do.

Mancini falls into that catagory, which stops him from being a true 'great' as a manager & it was Glen Hoddle's biggest problem (apart from being fucking weird).

Has to be a big question mark on Cloughie mate. He only ever played in the 2nd division didn't he?

Had to retire in his early twenties with a cruciate injury I think. Fuckin top clas manager though. The best ever in IMO cos he made two shite 2nd division teams into trophy winning sides with very little cash.

None of these were outstanding players.

Gullit - did "OK" for a while as a manager. Didn't Cruyff also do "OK" for a while ?
Dalglish, Souness - did reasonably well up to a point.
Guardiola inherited a great team.
Rijkaard - what's he up to these days ?
Wor Jackie .
Maradona - LOL

Hussain is right about Botham - the same is probably true about Warne - I don't think he would have succeeded as captain of Oz.

I think your username sums up Botham tbh. He was the England cricket version of our Rodney Marsh (not the cricket one!).

He had untimate talent but his way to deal with the best quartet of bowlers the world has ever seen (ie the West Indies), when England were in the shit, would often be to crash a quickfire 32 because that method worked twice v Australia.

Now his comments are very often extreme & knee jerk & inconsistent, like our Rodney.

Many of the top skilled footballers are of a similar mentality when you listen to them talk football.

Remember hearing about Hoddle, I think when he was at Swindon - some of the players had spent about an hour practising free kicks with little success. Hoddle walked up, told them they were doing it wrong and promptly scored with his first try. If you're a journeyman player, I can't imagine that improves your confidence.

Mancini was a top quality player and obviously very driven in the way he used to design the shirts etc. You did get the impression he wouldn't be able to understand someone who wasn't that talented or committed.

Management in football shares a lot with management in business. Yes, you need to know the business (tactics), but everything you will achieve will be through the efforts of others and you need to know how to get the best out of them. Some need to be challenged, others encouraged, some need pushing, others patience etc. knowing when to use these techniques has little to do with knowing how to kick a ball.

I'm sure that a Doug report from training had Mancini complaining about crossing and strolled up and put a perfect cross in - then you had Platt with an overhead kick in training - as a player I'd expect that to be a mark of respect, 'I know what I'm saying is right as this is how you do it' maybe it's about the mentality of the player, which is why it was right to move on the likes of Johnson

Actually I am now going to argue with myself that poor coaching is where you tell rather than encourage & make someone believe they can do it, however, you need to sometimes show someone it can be done so that they understand what they think is impossible is possible.
