I gather you have not been to the country.

I have and in my experience its a shite hole.

You gather wrong Carl, I've traveled extensively in Brazil and even lived in one of the city's that are hosting world cup games (Manaus) which is a bit dodgy around the port district but wonderful apart from that. The outlying towns are absolutely idyllic and I recommend anyone visiting to stay over at Alter-do-chao, where I lived off and on, which is set against a freshwater lagoon surrounded by gorgeous sandy beaches and palm trees.

All I can say is that you've been to the wrong parts Carl. The vast majority of the Brazilian people are more warm and friendly than you'd ever expect to meet in the uk. Even the poorest of the shoeshine boys in Manaus would share his last cigarette with a stranger as a matter of common decency by their fine standards.
They are a lovely people and you do them a terrible disservice by castigating the whole on the basis of your pin-hole view of their beautiful country.

Then I respect your opinion , I just don't share most of it.
My brother in law is Brasilian and he tends to agree with me..there again most people do just to avoid an argument.

I worked for 3 months as well down there a year and a half ago. Was mainly in Quetzaltenango, which was a lot cleaner than Guatemala City (most unsafe shithole I've ever been to by far). Since it was a last minute assignment, I didn't realize that I'd be 7,500 feet above sea level and surrounded by volcanos, which was quite a surprise!

But despite the crime, parts of Guatemala are jaw-droppingly beautiful (and so fucking cheap haha). Lake Atitlan in particular. Spent most weekends there and loved it.

It is quite beautiful , kept expecting a dinosaur to pop round one of those volcanoes !!!!
I ran a few casinos there , not for the fainthearted !!

This was one Volcano when I was on the road from Guatemala City to some place near the Mexican border.

Similar mix of violence and beauty as you'd find in Brazil

Found this thread very interesting, never been to Brazil but would love to go one day.
Just out of curiosity did you ever go to any football games whilst you were there? If so what were they like, were they as wild as people make out?

Saw the xelaju superchivos (super goats) a few times. The quality of play is not very good at all (a league below MLS), the pitch is horrible, and the stadium is falling apart/covered in mud. But its really cheap ($2 for 32oz beer in the stadium) and the fans make a great atmosphere with constant singing, flares, and lots of "passion" lol. Leaving is always a hassle since you already shouldn't be walking around at night and now you're in a crowd of 5,000 drunk/crazy football fans...

One thing that Herb said that I feel needs to be re-emphasized is that the majority of brasilians are some of the nicest, most outgoing, hospitable, and fun people that you'll ever meet. Extreme poverty, drug gangs, violence, crime, and corruption are rampant (all a result of the massive inequality); but Brasilian people in general are wonderful.

So don't confuse what myself and carl were saying about the dangers in Brasil with the people themselves. (though carl may have a different perspective)
