Mancheter United have reportedly earmarked Fiorentina centre-back Stefan Savic as their main target to replace Nemanja Vidic, who recently confirmed he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season once his contract at the Premier League champions expires.

Savic struggled during his time at Manchester City to secure a place in Roberto Mancini's line up and after just one season at the Etihad Stadium they sold to Fiorentina as part of the deal that saw Matija Nastasic move in the opposite direction.

However, the 23-year-old defender has established himself at Fiorentina and is currently considered one of the best young defenders in the Serie A.

According to Italian outlet MediaSet the Premier League holders have been monitoring him recently and they are planning a summer bid to secure his services.

Savic is a better bet than Nasty. Sad but true.

I think a lot of centre halves need plenty of game time to mature into proper players, better able to read the game and make the right positional choices.
When he was with us he was like a cat on a hot tin roof and is was never sure what he was going to do next, he often seemed to be inwardly panicking. Always reminded me of a young horse, jumping about!
Having said that, he was young an inexperienced, and it wouldn't surprise me if he has improved with a couple of years playing, albeit in a very different and IMO easier league for defenders.
Would I bring him back? Haven't seem him play recently so prejudice says no.
Is he better than Nastasic? Not comparing the seasons they've had with us but maybe his rate of improvement through regular game time has meant he's overtaken him.

And therein is our dilemma for young players. Ideally we need two first choice centre halves and a back up of a street wise older pro who will accept his game time is limited but can be trusted when called on, plus a young prospect, who won't get much game time but could step up. And which young player is going to do that, when they could get the game time they need at other clubs? They've either got to be so exceptional they could force their way into the team (like Varanne did) or we are going to have to churn them/ nurture them by loaning out so they can improve.

I'm still very disappointed with Gollum's performances and achievements this season.

He could do far worse than he's doing at the moment and I don't think he's trying hard enough.

Come on Gollum, step up to the plate.

Transitional season. He will be truly bad when he gets into his stride next time out.

yup, he's having to battle "new manager syndrome" at present

Plus he's under an immense amount of pressure from the fans favorite to replace him, who's currently enjoying imediate success at Cardiff ... oh hang on ...

There's a boatload of ex-rags who could be their next manager, it's just difficult to decide who'd be best.

I actually find the Daily Mail has a good sports section which makes me feel uneasy as the bulk of the paper is written by sensationalist, fascist, bullying pricks.

I googled that "52% of pickpockets are Romanian" reference earlier and the first four sites up were:

BNP,
m-BNP,
express,
mail.
The mail sports section would have to be wriiten by angels, give everlasting life and be printed on fifty pound notes before I'd read it.

I have to admit that I do look at Red Cafe on occasion and there is a brilliant thread on at the moment which asks people just to describe the positives of this season.

The scary thing is that after Janusaj ( or however it's spelt) one of the most common positives is the performances of Welbeck and Jones.

If these are the silver linings then my god how black the clouds must be!

Not all of them no, just enough.

He is slow, dodgy in the air & prone to really fucking stupid mistakes & he's playing in Italy, home of the slow, shit centre back & slow shithouse strikers who can't run & don't challenge for crosses making it appear sometimes as if he is ok in the air; he isn't.

Eg:

Welcome win for Cagliari
Last Updated: 01/02/14 7:53pm

Cagliari enjoyed a better chance when Stefan Savic lost the ball in a dangerous area. Neto stopped Pinilla from clipping home an easy tap-in and then watched gratefully as Daniele Dessena smashed the rebound wide.

and.....

Even though Fiorentina's race had been run for some time, they were relieved to see the flailing Savic manage to avoid scoring a calamitous own-goal from Conti's cross deep into stoppage time.

If the rags sign this cunt, it is a time for rejoicing.

Hmmm ... A bit of internet searching can reveal anything you want, especially if you choose to be selective in your cut and pasting. As you might know there are many more positive comments that you could have quoted.
My main point is that central defenders, probably after goalies, are the key position where experience can lead to improvement....and to write Savic off after only a few appearances when he was less experienced a couple of years ago could be a mistake.
