Quiz question - squad numbers

Postby Tony P » Wed Mar 05, 2014 1:28 pm

To alleviate the boredom of this international week a question:

Since the introduction of squad numbers in 1993, which City shirt number has had the most occupants and the least?

I don't know the answer to this question but would love to know. My money is on whatever number Richard Dunne had.

Also, I noticed that the Football League only introduced squad numbers in 1999 so I'd forgotten that we were squad numberless during our years in the wilderness.

Going up to what number? We've had players using really distant numbers like 83 in recent years...

I'd have naturally guessed 1 has always been occupied, but I have a feeling it was vacant for a season when Isaksson left, and also we signed Nash mid-season, and he got the Number 1 squad shirt, so it must have been vacant for at least the first half of that season.

23 the least used? Marc Vivien Foe's shirt number.

Interesting enough, in the squad numbers 1-25, only the numbers 2, 8 and 11 are the only ones to be ever present in our squad lists in the premier league. However, 11 is somewhat debatable as that's Scott Sinclair this year!

45... I feel sorry for Greg Cunningham, he chose 45, then the season after Balotelli joined and he wanted it, so Greg chose 22 for that season, then Gael Clichy joined and wanted it, so he gave 22 up and chose 33 for the season, then Nastasic joined and wanted that number so Greg left LOL

Yeah im not mad on 45 either, despite balotelli wearing it for us it still looked shit to me! I think it should be capped, although did i read somewhere in england they have some sort of rule about using next available number?

I also hate stupid things like central midfielders wearing two like diaby and clint dempsey did for a while and i hate seen 9 on anything other than strikers!

There were quite a few "false 9s" around before the PL ; Galvin for Spurs, Heighway for Scouse (he was a winger, really) and Mac Kenzie for us.
