Victor Valdes

Apologies if there is already a thread on this guy, the search function doesn't work on the app.

Reports out today that we're close to agreeing a deal with him his summer as his contract with Barca is up and he's not staying there.

What do people think about him? Him vs Joe? Does this mean we'd sell Joe if we got Valdes?

I personally think he is better than joe but only because his distribution is better. Can't see us getting rid of joe though.

Even if he was better than Joe, if he was a replacement, he would be cutting down our squad options for any other signings, due to the 'homegrown' rule, therefore it would only make sense if he was replacing Panti, not Joe.

No thanks. Also Joe is homegrown which is an advantage.
Joe has improved recently after a terrible start to the season and his blip seems to be over.
As long as he never comes rushing out of his area to challenge one of our own defenders for the ball he'll be fine.

There's always been question marks over his command of his area, hasn't there?

Definitely better with the ball at his feet than Hart and probably his equal if not better on shot stopping.

It would definitely create some good competition which can only be good for us.

Disagree. I'd agree for any other position but it's important to build consistency between the backline and keeper especially.
Also unlike other positions you can't exactly play two keepers or accommodate them both into the team.
It would lead to one being unhappy.

Joe is one of the few talented English players, let's not let him go.

Agree totally. God forbid we ever go down route of rotating keepers.
What I can't understand is why Valdes would come if he's not promised he'd be number one?

Why wouldn't we want Hart as our no 1? He answered the questions earlier this season and has come back the better for it.

No he's a good player but so is Hart. JH has been excellent recently. We just don't need Valdes. Better a young up and coming understudy.

b/c he will never be any good at 'sweeper keeper' (awful phrase, but anyway) and that is where we're heading. he is just shite at distribution and in 1 v 1s. I think pellers would swap him in a heartbeat if our mgt allowed it.

So what keeps Joe on his toes then if he's not being challenged for his place?

Valdes will not come here to be a backup plan. We might see Joe on his way, maybe even to Barcelona.

It might be a shame, he finally looked back on his form.

I would like to buy one more great keeper it would push Hart and that keeper to work more an be more focus, we lost at list 9 points on goalie blunders. If is true that Begovic would go to Real Madrid (apparently Ancelotti like him and was trayed to bring him to Chelsea before) i would like more Casillas ( i think hes one of the great ones) then Valdes .
You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

An up and coming young keeper or an oldie who's happy to play cup games and sit on the bench.
Goalkeeper is the one position you really need consistency, neither Valdes or Hart would want to be number two.
Would be a bad idea.
