Both the player and his agent have been told that there is no chance that the club will allow him to leave. The agent has also been told that any further public lobbying for a move will lead to unspecified action.
Toure kicked off speculation about his future at the Etihad when he went on twitter to first disagreed then agreed with his agent’s statement that he felt “unwanted” at City.
Agent Dimitri Seluk had said that because Toure had not been presented with a birthday cake by the club on his 31st birthday he felt “unloved” and that he was prepared to go somewhere where he felt more appreciated.
Later, on national radio, he mentioned Barcelona as a possible destination for the player and claimed there was only a “50-50″ chance that he would still be at the Etihad next season.
The story turned to farce when pictures were published which showed that Toure had in fact received not one but two birthday cakes from the club and Seluk then seemed to claim that the cakes were not big enough and had not been presented by the right people.
The claims, which continued in the national press – at one point Seluk said Toure might stay but only if he was offered guaranteed a job at the club after he retired – led to a storm of ridicule in the media and on fan’s forums and forced City to act.
Both the player and his agent were contacted by the club and referred to both the new lucrative four year contract that Toure had just signed and to the club’s internal code of discipline.
Toure has said that he will explain he position following the World Cup and, at the time of writing appears to have deleted his twitter account.
Meanwhile, the club is posed to unveil its first signing of the summer transfer window: Porto midfielder Fernando.
The club is believed to have landed the 26 year-old Brazilian for £15 million. City initially tried to sign the player in January, but failed to agree a fee.
