what a great game last night, thoroughly entertaining 0-0 after 90 mins, then a great performance from both teams in extra time.
thought Belgium had the quality in their team but USA were brilliant, energy drive and enthusiasm for 120 mins in that climate was some effort.

Well done to both, just hope the next few games can come somewhere near that level. Doubt it though, its going to get cagier from here on in. Maybe the Costa Rica game is the one to watch for excitement as they will just go for it. Poss Belgium too, they have a nothing to lose attitude and Argies have big pressure on them, Plus the crowd will be 90% in favour of Belgium, or at least anti-Argentina.

just for clarification...if you've just called me "doodles" then we might have some issues.

Otherwise, i agree with what you just said. We had our chances and didn't take them.

That spirit within the England team and you'd have given Columbia the fucking game of the tourney so far. It's an actual shame that you accept Roy and his bollox-y bollox as acceptable. It's part of what i'd call this reverential cultural attachment to faux regal bullshit that underlies the only stuff i dislike about British culture. There is this superficial element to certain things, and the national team being a great example, yet at the most cynical level you cunts are the most insightful and "real" group of people i've ever met -- never one to mince words and a laser-like ability from even the most working class folks to break shit down "like it is" and speak their mind. But why you stand for the bullshit of pomp and circumstance over actual quality content is beyond me. It's almost like you enjoy the misery and bullshit of it to have "something" to call your own.

And yes i'm talking shit, but am i making any sense to anyone? If not, just tell me to fuck off and i'll do my best.

cheers

Don't get me wrong, Howard was great last night, but why did they keep shooting at his feet? If they had aimed a bit higher they could've scored a couple of goals more.
"I used to be 6 foot 2 with curly hair, look what it's done to me"

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

I think there are a lot less proud americans than 99.9% by a good portion. I know that's an exaggeration but there have always been groups not so rah rah and of late they've had more fuel to their fire.

Honestly? I think there has been increased scrutiny, awareness and frustration with things in the u.s. especially given events of the past 15 years... the wars, economic problems, student debt, govt spying, etc. I think support of the us national team has grown because it is a 'safer' way to do so when you may not feel so proud otherwise.

Sorry if that's too political but i think it accurately reflects some of why the team is supported and feels motivated. There are other american cultural things going on, some new (changing demographics where mellenials age and new immigrat groups has made an impact) and old (work hard/never give up even if an underdog and not as skilled).

Either way was a good showing and goad it has been helping the sport grow as i get to watch baseball die a slow death :)

Quarter Finals day today and Lawro has gone for 2-0 all round

Friday, 4 July
France v Germany 0-2
Brazil v Colombia 2-0
Saturday, 5 July
Argentina v Belgium 0-2
Netherlands v Costa Rica 2-0

I personally think Columbia might just scare brazil and nick it in extra time

Brazil 1 2 Colombia
France 1 1Germany (2-1 Germany aet)
Argentina 1 1 Belgium (Belgium on pens)
Holland 0 2 Costa Rica

I'm watching in Bratislava, on holiday. We passed several bars where the Germans have congregated and just the one singing 'Allez les Bleus', and settled for a more neutral one mainly full of Slovaks. I'm hoping for a French victory in my heart but predicting a Germany win with my head.

Bit of a let down really. It turned into a very scrappy game.Brazil took on the role of spoilers and never allowed Columbia to play.Must have been close to a record number of fouls in the game.

Germany France was very entertaining, but I found myself really wanting Columbia to come back then, despite wanting it for fernandhino. I guess the power of my hatred for hulk, neymar and Luiz won out.
Tracking back is overrated.

Brasil is shit. Hulk and Paulino and Fred are garbage. Jesus. How they trot maicon out as well?

This team wants a spanking.

It is a shame that Brazil go further. A truly awful unorganised and poor team. Shocking decisions enable awful teams to progress.

At least the Germans are intelligent enough to stop this rubbish.

Columbia deserved the win.
