Boyata?

I noticed this name amongst the subs today and must admit that I have never heard of him.

I didn't buy a programme today but checked the programme from the Sunderland game and can't see him listed on the team-sheet?

Who is he? Where did he come from? What is his squad number? What position does he play??

Dedryck Boyata, Belgian CB, came to City at the start of the 2007/08 season from FC Bruxelles. I dunno his number but if I'm not mistaken Doug has said good things of him in the past months watching training and reserves matches.

hes a reserve player from our academy and a CB - I believe he is Belgium and a youth team international and I think I might be right in saying he played for citeh against chelsea in the youth cup final

other than that - not a great deal I can tell you !


EDIT - sorry not from the academy as such he came from FC Brussels when he was 16 as mentioned earlier in the thread

Whoever he is he has obviously impressed Bobby in training.

Good to see him and Vidal on the bench today, it must give hope to all the academy and reserve lads when things like this happen.

Definitely not a short defender but a tall centre back. When he plays with the reserves with Ben Mee as partner Boyata is the dominant one in the air. I quite like him but at prem level he might not be strong enough .....Yet

Just goes to prove that you don't read any of my Youth Cup reports mate. I've been banging on about the legend that will be Dedryk Boyata for a couple of years now. Very prominent in the Youth Cup Semis win over Sunderland, where he got kicked to bits in both legs (almost with racist undertones) but was exceptional.

Very interested to hear your view Doug, really hope the lad strengthens up as I really liked his attitude over the last couple of seasons in the Youth Cup.

Dedryck Boyata was forced to cancel his Christmas plans but couldn’t have been happier with the results.

The strapping 19-year-old centre half was packed and ready to board a flight back home to Belgium to sample some of mum Bridget’s Yuletide cooking when Roberto Mancini told him to make fresh arrangements.

And instead of tucking into turkey in the low countries, Boyata, who has been at the Academy since he was 16-years-old, was squeezing on to the bench against Stoke sat next to such international luminaries as Micah Richards and Craig Bellamy.

Far from labelling Mancini some kind of Italian Grinch, Boyata was only too delighted that the new boss had given him a chance to add to his football education and get up close and personal to the Premier League.

“This has to be one of the best Christmas times ever,” gushed Boyata even though he didn’t get beyond the bench.

“It was so exciting to be told I would be in the squad for the game yesterday.

"Really to come from nowhere like that
to the first team bench is incredible.
Now I want more of it"

“The manager’s staff said that he has a track record of blooding young players if he thinks they are good enough and there were a couple of us on the bench against Stoke. Some of us have been taking part in training sessions – we do have a lot of injuries – and it gives you that additional bit of confidence.

“Match day with the first team is so different than anything I have experienced before. There is a real buzz and intensity that you don’t realise is there until you are part of it. Just the wall of noise from the crowd is quite amazing.

“I feel as though I have learned so much from the whole experience. I was desperate to get on the pitch to make my parents proud but maybe one day soon.”

With Nedum Onuoha and Joleon Lescott missing again on Monday night Boyata will remain in the squad that travels to Molineux to face Wolves.

With injuries and absentees, he was probably selected to the mix with the likes of Garrido today, due to our plight.

However, regardless of the scenario, it's great to see another youngster on the brink of some first team action. Well done dedryck!!

Quite every year and in every former club (lazio excepted) Mancini picked up a young player from the unders:
- fm fiorentina he picked up Palombo, now Sampdoria captain and already capped international
- fm inter he picked up both balotelli and santon.

I saw him play recently in the Swiss mini tour the youngsters made. Although he didn't have to do anything extraordinary, he looke very solid and difficult to beat. He is quite fast too and very strong in the tackle. Wabara I remember seemed to be the better of the players but that could just be that particular game.

Of course it could easily be the injury situation but it's always great to see younger players given an opportunity.

Whenever I've seen Boyata he's looked a decent prospect imo. Miles better than the much vaunted Ben Mee who has no pace or aerial ability & reminds me of Alan Kernaghan.

Very difficult to judge young defenders though. Some of the good ones turn to shit & some shit ones suddenly improve.
