If it comes off, he may return in the future a far better manager. If he has Sociedad randomly hoofing the ball into the oppo penalty area, then he will show himself up even further. But at least he's having a go, unlike most British managers & players, who don't have the balls to test themselves outside their comfort zone.
No idea how he will communicate with the players though.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of many [English] Managers who have gone abroad to ply their trade.
Woy Hodgson, Bobby Robson and the 'Brolly Man' immediately spring to mind and, paradoxically, they all managed the England team.........I wonder if this is a portent that Gollum will one day manage the national side (England, that is) ??
Heaven forfend such an eventuality coming about.

There's been a few in Scandinavia, e.g. Stuart Baxter, Bob Houghton, Keith Blunt etc.
But that's not a very big transition, culturally or football-wise.

Venables was another England manager to go abroad...
John Toshack (Welsh), Chris Coleman (Welsh) and Harry Lowe all managed Sociedad, too.
Souness, Platt, Peter Reid, Bryan Robson, Revie, Peter Taylor and David James all managed/manage abroad, too.
I'm sure I heard Carlton Palmer was managing in China, too...

Ah so , it seems plenty of managers and players do have the desire to manage and train abroad then. Yet another generalisation sorted.
