Choose a midfielder

Postby Slim » Mon Dec 08, 2014 11:49 am

I think we need a central attack minded midfielder, someone over the next season to take over from Yaya, who quite frankly we should have replaced last summer. Choices? Young, athletic, eye for goal, let's see. Ignore price, ignore the selling club, who would you prefer?

Pogba for me, Reus second choice. I think Yaya will still be here next season though, looks like he is coming into form again now.

Voted Pogba if the only choice was to replace Yaya right away.

Barkley if it was for the future.

Reus if it was a choice of which player to actually sign for the squad, but not to replace Yaya.

My first choice would be keep Yaya & rotate a couple of them alongside him. Wouldn't swap any.

I went for Ramsey as he's the only one I've seen play more than a couple of times. I've been impressed by Barkley and think he can be the real deal but that is such a shallow opinion coming from me. Hoping to become more enlightened by this thread.

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

Went for Barkley - more or less solely as he's english and I think will be the next big english midfielder

Barkley.

Pay the £60m in January and get it done if we can. When we qualified for the CL in May 2011 I was of the opinion we should have offered £50m for Bale then, and that ship has long sailed. I have a feeling Barkleys price will only go up.

Pogba would be my 2nd selection as its a long term replacement for Ya Ya that we need - a presence in central midfield who can effect both penalty boxes and of the choices listed only Barkley and Pogba fit that bill.

We have to stay within a 10 mil loss in the accounts this season, to avoid paying the full fine & having restrictions continue for next season.

We can't pay 60 mil for Barkley even if we want to.

Not even if we manage to sell Nastasic or someone else? Ya Ya even if we can get PSG to offer £30m?

Barkley would cost us north of £60m in the summer so his fee will be even higher. Ah well.

No, we don't get the money for Negredo til next season, which seems to be the plan to me; clear all the restrictions now, spend money then. Even then I doubt it will be on Barkley.

In a way, I'd be quite happy not to buy anyone in at the moment, but hold on for a couple of years to see how any of the youngsters from the Academy progress.

We might not get a 'box to box' player from that source but it would be, in some ways, more satisfying if some of our own were to make the grade and bring their Academy skills and approach to the first team.

Clichy 29 yrs
Zaba 29 yrs
Kolarov 29 yrs
Kompany 28 yrs
MDM 33 yrs
Boyata 24 yrs
Nastasic 21 yrs
Mangala 23 yrs

I think some of the recent signings have deliberately been older, in order to be able to gradually bring in younger players both signings & academy, behind them, from a position of strength. We will have a better idea in a year or so, which academy players are likely to come through short term. I don't see a Barkley/Pogba type player amongst them, so it's reasonable to assume we could sign such a player without treading on toes, but the fee for either is likely to be too much imo.

May have a secret transfer fee clause in the contract, which won't be secret if that bloke is involved. If that's the case, then it might not be as much as Barkley.
