Bellamy, MOTD say offside, SKY say not

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Bellamy, MOTD say offside, SKY say not

Postby Im_Spartacus » Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:26 pm

Was Bellamy offisde, and can someone explain this 2nd phase to me? MOTD says yes, Sky say no

To me he looked offside - I can understand that in terms of the game flowing FIFA want this rule, however as seen if the defender heads it straight to one of the opposition, and they then pass to the player who was originally offide, then surely it is wrong.

Then again, dont even get me fucking started about Danny Tiatto / Middlesboro /£100 lost on first goal bet etc - because that was A CUNTS trick

According to the rulebook...technically not offside

Alan Hansen was just pissed as we kept our distance from the scousers ;-)

Offside for me. He WAS interfering with play, cos if the linesman had put his flag up the defender wouldn't have headed it to Barry.
We had the rub of the green tonight, decisions might go against us in the future, that's football.

Thats what I understood from sky, shit rule though in this case isnt it, he was only where he was because he was offside.

However had he subsequently run through and banged the ball in the net, I would have been fucked off big time as a Wolves fan. I suppose it is down to Wolves to defend the play, not foul Barry and not concede the free kick. I dont have much sympathy for how the goal was conceeded, but it does seem a shit rule.

At the end of the day, how many free kicks that shouldn't have been given against us this year led to equalisers - cost Hughes his job. I have no sympathy for McCarthy - it seems that what has gone around is starting to come around?

It's a shit rule. The linesman didn't put his flag up because Bellamy didn't touch the ball, yet the defender only cleared it because Bellamy was behind him.

I'd have been annoyed if it was the other way around, but that's the rule unfortunately.

Still Wolves could have cleared the ball before Mancienne fouled Barry and should have set their wall up better for the free kick.

Clearly offside but Wolves can't complain it lead directly to the goal. If their defender hadn't of poleaxed Barry there would not have been a freekick to defend.

Never offside. The ball is played over which Bellamy has no influence on. The defender heads it forward and by time our player passes it through, Bellamy has moved back into an onside position, carries on the game and gets a free kick.

Sorry, but does Big Mick not understand the rule? Wasn't Wolves already losing? Did we not score another goal?

Maybe if you played your full team you wouldn't have to ask questions of anyone else! Who've you got for your next 2 games Mick; are you sure you didn't give this one away???

Eh? You mean apart from it being intended for him and him running onto it AND putting pressure on the defender?

It should've definitely been given offside. But as has been said we'll take it and I think we would've won either way.

Sorry Mum, you are wrong! Maybe afew years ago he woul've been called, but in the modern day game he is not really interfering with play - the defender had chance to clear, but he failed.

Question: If the defender had headed it to a Wolves player, would this question be asked?

This very thing was the reason for the thread.

Bellamy was haring down the wing from an offside position, and the defender PLAYED TO THE WHISTLE, he headed the ball out under duress. Had Bellamy been given offside, free kick to Wolves. Had Bellamy not been haring down the wing, the defender would have either let the ball go over his head and go out, or let it bounce, run wide and control it under the foot.

Its a shit bit of legislation, and its a fucking ridiculous rule if how you guys have interpreted it is correct

No, because it would've been irrelevent, but he still would've been offside.

Counter question: if the defender didn't head the ball would he have been offside?

Counter question x2: if Bellamy had been a few steps back and onside initially would he have reached the ball he received?

All this phase 1, phase 2, phase 3 bollocks is just that. Bollocks. I wish they'd return to the old system of offside is offside.

I think it was brought in to keep the game flowing, and IMO, to see more goals scored. I think it had something to do with the aftermath of the American World Cup when they wanted bigger goals to keep their audience more interested. FiFA couldn't sanction that but brought in other legislation to suit.

The goal and situation surrounding it was legitimate according to the regulations, and I see no reason why people have got a problem with it, especially managers who know what these regulations are.

Anyone remember the Dunn/Blackburn incident not to long ago?

the way it was explained on sky was that Bellamy would only have been flagged offside when he received the ball.

The problem with this explanation is that the same linesman (the lardy one) gave offside decision in our favour against a wolves striker in our 6 yard box BEFORE he received the ball thereby giving our defenders the chance to stop play before they made a mistake trying to head the ball clear, which is what happened with Bellamy later on.

Either way we were lucky but then again we should have scored on at least three other occasions and Mancienne did not have to body check Barry.

On a sidenote, I thought the linesman was a little overweight. He regularly struggled to keep up with play.

This is not a slight on the man himself, but up against someone like Bellamy? He doesn't stand a chance!
