I was sat there thinking I hope Garrido takes this whilst the clueless commentators were making out he was there as a decoy, how much longer can they willfully fail to do any homework on our players going in to games. The same thing before the game with the crap about Micah at LB, they only had to go back ONE GAME in to the past to see what Mancini was likely to do with both Micah and Zabba on the pitch, or maybe they could have listened to Mancini's reply when they asked him the question, "Richards can play Centre Back or RIGHT BACK"

After the excitement dies down about the great free kick I find myself looking at the situation next day and thinking we are still weak in the left back position. Bridge is out for a long time. Then Sylvinho, Garrido, and Zabba at left back just aren't good enough. We got away with it against weak opposition (Stoke, Wolves). Better opposition will exploit this fully. Remember how Lennon took Sylvinho to the cleaners?

If we are going to buy in the transfer window then LB is the number one priority. And I would also like to see a world class right back as well. With Toure out in Africa I would consider playing Richards as centre back cover and get a new right back in. I still think centre back is Micah's better position.
I must remember to get a new signature.....

He's getting new found fame now...check out the OS

Javier Garrido is slowly becoming a free kick specialist!

His first goal for the club was a stunning effort against Liverpool last season and he doubled his tally with another eye catching effort at Wolves last night.

The Spaniard, who has hardly had a kick at first team level this season, admits that it is not an accident that he is so adept at set pieces.

“I stay behind after training some days and work at free kicks alongside Carlos Tevez, Craig Bellamy and Robinho and it has paid off,” smiled the former winger turned left back.

“Last night Carlos wanted to take the kick but I asked him to let me have a try because in that moment I felt so confident I could score.

“Perhaps the goalkeeper was surprised and was expecting someone else to take the kick but the ball did exactly as I wanted it to and it was an important goal in an important game.

We have great players here who are better than me at free kicks so I had to take the chance when I felt it was right.

...Javier Garrido

Garrido admits that he has had some frustration at being on the sidelines in recent months but the 24-year-old has never given up hope of a recall to first team action despite the presence of both Wayne Bridge and Sylvinho.

Until he came on as a substitute against Sunderland on Boxing Day he had not kicked a ball in anger in the Premier League but he knew he would be ready if asked by new boss Roberto Mancini.

“I am someone who works hard every day in training so that I am ready when called,” he declared.

“This is an exciting moment for me. The new manager is giving everyone some minutes and it is a chance to show what I can do.

“Every player wants to play in every game but that is not always possible but you have to stay mentally and physically sharp and ready for opportunities.

“The win at Wolves was a big result for the club. It means we have won three games in succession following the defeat at Spurs and we are close to the top four places in the league.”

Im all for the resergence with Gary, but he's hardly been tested defensively in the last 2 games.

Alot of short memories here, Gary was pretty much responisble for most of the most we conceded when we lost 6-0 to Chelsea? He use to have regular horror shows, and was the main reason we bought Bridge, and even used Zabs as left back last season when needed.

I really hope, he has matured slightly and can made a fresh start. He must have something to give because Sven and Tord Grip know good players when they see them.

Quality free kick with the art of surprise the main factor. Well done Garrido.

I don't see Garrido as the answer to our left back position but he could play left midfield if we had to play a more defensive line up. Good squad player who has youth on his side so has time to improve. Keep him this season and see how many matches he plays to the end of the season before making a decision on his future at City.

always been amazing at free kicks, stayed behind to practice them all these months hes not been in the squad. I said that just before he came on. Dunno about his tackling as a left back though. Left winger maybe ?

I could see him as a left sided midfielder in the squad. Imo he's simply not good enough or strong enough to be a top 4 defender but as a midfielder he's a comparitively good tackler, neat & tidy & he's shown before that he delivers a good quality cross. Last season great crosses were a waste of time but with Ade & RSC in the squad, you never know, perhaps Gaz could find a niche for himself, especially as few of our squad can take free kicks.

I've noticed that Javi has been brought on now twice when we seemed to be defending a lead. I think Mancio is bringing him on to predominantly sure up the back 4, basically covering Frank. We all know the background of Javi's downfall, but he did seem to be getting back on the wagon before being dropped for the incoming Bridge. I thought he was starting to show promise and was more than happy to have him in the team which i mentioned on quite a few occassions, although I do prefer him in a midfield role covering the FB.

Mancho wants to give everyone a chance and with the quality all throughout the squad it's a chance for the forgotten players to step up. I hope he takes this opportunity as he is a gifted player, didn't he captain the Spanish u21 team at one point as well? And at 24 he not yet in his prime as a defender, so there is always the chance that he could come good. I would much rather see him as a left sided defensive midfielder though, and his ability at deadballs hasn't really been an unknown quality since before he came to us. When he stepped up against Liverpool last season I said to my mates, sit back and watch this.

Colin the King wrote:I commented on this briefly in the ratings thread- I've rated Garrido since he signed for us. In Sven's season, he was one of our most consistent performers until the post-Christmas collapse. Footballs fans always look for scapegoats when things go wrong so rather than recognising that the whole team was falling apart at the seams, people chose to pick out Garrido and a couple of others and berate them at every opportunity- the reality is he was a 21 year-old kid coming in to an unfamiliar country. He was bound to have off days. But what about his performances against the rags, Arsenal, Villa and others in that season? Surely they proved he's a perfectly capable left back.

I never understood Hughes' downright refusal to play him- there were times when he seemed to anything BUT give Gaz playing time. Richards at left back at Bolton and Middlesbrough last November, which we both lost, and then Ball or Sylvinho preferred at times. Baffling. As Slim said, Mancini has obviously recognised he can offer us something different- whatever about his lack of pace or supposed tackling weaknesses, you can't fault him technically- he's a wonderful passer and great on set pieces- his corners and crosses from wide areas were almost always inch perfect.

Look, he's not Paulo Maldini but I think he's got a part to play- be it at left back or in midfield- and there are certainly others I'd be getting rid of before him. Don't forget to factor in that he only cost £1million. A bargain I'd say given his versatility and, on the evidence of training, desire to better himself.

Good post, I would have made a lot of similar points if you hadn't got there first.

Garrido was regarded by us as a potential signing of the season. He was very good. It went downhill and he had a few bad games but I think everyone accepts that he didn't have an attitude problem, he worked really hard and was ready when he finally got another chance. He'd probably been waiting too long. Our previous manager (nod to KK) had a funny attitude towards relying on Bridge and completely excluding Ball and Garrido. Better player but there seemed to be more to it (to me).

Javier reminds me a lot of Riera. Had an effective loan here but was called out for being slow and we didn't push too hard to sign him permanently. Since went on to get a commendable number of caps for Spain and a big move to Liverpool (where's he's a significant player). Whilst I don't expect him to be 1st XI, I do expect him him to have a more important role for the team.

Since when was he ever bad ? Come good ? I was really annoyed when we bought Bridge and i still haven't seen anything from
Bridge to convince me otherwise. I felt it was poor the way Hughes simply dumped Garrido to rot, so to speak. So i'm quite pleased for Garrido and hope he can get some more starts and improve as a defender. He was branded a poor defender after the Chelsea game under sven, but like i say, i think he's as good as Bridge and has age on his side.

I think it's quite obvious to all that leftback is our weakest position (rightback is close here too) and I do not think Garrido will be the solution to this problem. Technically gifted, but against the pace of the some of the right wingers he will and has been left exposed before. Maybe with Bellamy ahead of him it would be a slightly different story but we can't be reliant on him to bail out leftbacks all the time like he has with Sylvinho and Bridge. Maybe a summer spent on the Stevie Ireland fitness program will help out.

And I said to the lads in the pub. "This is going in". The mere fact that garrido was hanging around, especially when we've seen Teves lump 20 metres over and wide recently.

A classic goal, well worthy of goal of the month. hit with some pace and lots of curve. a left footers dream !

Edit:

btw highlights are on the official site and well worth the 10 minutes !
