And yes, you could stand someone on the goalkeeper all game, and if someone shoots from the half way line and the keeper spills it without any pressure from the player in the box, the player is then onside.
Sorry mate, but you're wrong about this. If would have been different if it indeed was a cross, someone else - not in offside position and Crouch also no longer in offside position - made an attempt on goal, Hart saves and then Crouch bangs in the rebound.
But you are always offside if you score from a rebound if you're stood in offside when the shot is made.
