Toby Alderweireld

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Toby Alderweireld

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-2960244/Manchester-City-keen-summer-Southampton-loanee-Toby-Alderweireld.html

We're linked to him according to the Daily Fail.

Is he good enough for City? Do we need to and/or should we splash even more cash on central defenders?
I guess Demi is on his last legs, but Denayer looks to be good enough to be challenging for a spot next season. And there's also Mangala, which deserves more time to settle. if we could get him for a reasonable price, I wouldn't mind this transfer, but I don't think Atletico will let him go cheaply. He's seems to be the flavour of the month.

Dont really want us to sign anyone to be honest in that position. I just want the club to give deyner a shot. Him and Rekik as back ups maybe.

No he isn't good enough, no we aren't really in for him, and no I wouldn't want him even if he was going for free.

Press silly season is underway. Link Utd to players like Reus - like that's going to happen - and link City to underwhelming shite like this.

I agree with you. Mangala deserves another season to prove himself, and Denayer should defo be given the chance.
Rekik I don't think is good enough for City. It's time to sell him now - i think it's both in his and the club's best interest.

Absolutely.

Furthermore, we surely can't be contemplating the purchase/procurement of each and every defender who might become available, or sought after, when we've got other areas of the team that need to be addressed as a more urgent priority, IMHO.

I'm not convinced either, that DeMichelis "is on his last legs".

Mangala will come good, im sure of that. He has shown in spells how good he can be. Perhaps you are right about Rekik. Ive not seen enough of him if honest. Really rate Deyner though.

Well, if we do keep Rekik and loan him out again, it should be to a bottom of the table Premier league club. I don't think cutting it in the Dutch league is any indicator on whether you will be able to cut it in the English top tier.

I was only thinking about him yesterday, Noolie (or anyone else who watches the Dutch League (buggered if i can spell it from memory LOL) know how he is doing at PSV? I know they are running 4th at the minute, but is Rekik playing regularly and if so doing OK? Is he going to be good enough as back for us, or is he another that will eventually get sold on?

They're not running 4th, PSV are 12 points clear at the top!

I don't watch much Eredivisie to be honest, mostly highlights. I do go to PSV forums every now and then to see what their fans think of him, but it's been a while now. Might check again later today and dig out the old Rekik thread.

Rekik is having a really good season and IMO is a better level than the one Denayer is playing at the moment. the Prem is a different level though, so it will be good to get them both back and let them fight for the places/

Also, with regards to the Daily Fail, its a comic full of fantasy bollocks of chinners proportions. Yesterday they had Kyle Walker nailed on for the rags... lets hope they get that one right!!

Sorry but I watch Rekik very often, & he's shite.

Denayer is on another level.

a good case in point would be Luuk De Jong, when comparing the difference in playing in the Eredivisie

2009 –2012 FC Twente 76 apps - 39 goals
2012 –2014 Borussia Mönchengladbach 36 apps - 6 goals
2014 → Newcastle United (loan) 12 apps - 0 goals
2014 – Present PSV 22 apps - 13 goals

Which is the easiest division?

It amazes me how united get linked to players when everyone knows they have got the best in the world in every position. And the second best in the reserves.

I mentioned Alderweireld a few years back when he was at Ajax (if indeed that was him). I think he is a good player but for now I would rather the young players at the club be given an opportunity before we leap to the chequebook. That goes for various positions.

We're currently being linked with all and sundry (the former plays for Porto, the latter Dortmund, apparently) neither of whom will be turning up anytime soon.

I would be very surprised if Rekik could hold down a job in any Premier League team, although tbf Ben Mee does & he is the English version of Rekik, but he rarely gets a start in a centre back pairing.

Denayer is faster, miles miles miles better 1v1, better at tackling, positioning, faster reaction time, infinitely better on the turn, miles better on the ball, & better even in the air, which is Denayer's weakest point imo. Rekik is physicaly stronger, but an oil tanker is stronger than a powerboat. He is no doubt full of confidence, as PSV rarely come under any pressure whatsoever, & win most of the time. I would like him to get an opportunity to try out for City one more time, but if he ever gets in the team, then Denayer will probably be playing next to him as no way is he ever as good as Denayer, by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't think we will see Rekik in a City shirt again. But I hope I'm wrong , & we give him one last chance pre season.

Another problem for Rekik though, is Tosin Adarobioyo, who is also much more talented & will soon be in the frame.

Worth considering re Tosin how talented Rekik looked at 16/17 too... went strangely and depressingly backwards from 18 years on. Rekik looked composed, faster and great as a prospect. Just goes to show you how unpredictable these things are i guess.
