Richard Dunne.

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Richard Dunne.

Postby iwasthere2012 » Tue Jun 02, 2015 1:35 pm

It was reported in the Irish Mirror at the weekend that Richard Dunne was retiring from football, only to be reported as untrue ,on Twitter I think, the following day. Apparently he is intending to play on next year with whatever club, takes up his services.

I know he is often lampooned on here because of his OG record, but what do people really remember of him. I thought he was a better player than most gave him credit for, and above all else he was honest. He gave 100% and this is what endeared him to fans of both City and Ireland, where he sometimes seemed almost single-handedly to keep us in games.
He moved on with dignity when the club decided that they needed upgrades in his position. Some would argue that with the season we just had, we could have done with his commitment in a younger version of himself, amongst our central back pairings.

I wish him well whatever his decision. He always went about his business in an understated way.

Mostly fond memories from me. It soured when he didn't want us bringing in competition for him a tiny bit, but I prefer to think of the derbies with micah and he keeping out the droves or the crunching tackles or honest pro he was here.
Tracking back is overrated.

complete pisshead who was in last chance saloon, really glad KK gave him one last chance as he took it and was a great ambassador for the club and a player I really liked. Heart on your sleeve player who put his body on the line, often with comical outcomes.

I am in the pro-Dunney camp

he is a legend.

My favorite ever city player(well tied with kinkladze maybe).

I will have nothing bad said about Sir Richard.

His performance for ireland against russia in a nil all draw away was one of the best i have ever seen from a defender.

When defending backs to the wall theres no other person i want there, when on the front foot he is last defender i want in my team which is prob the reason he left when he did.....
derby day the scores were level,
then the goat was fed by neville,
silly boy should know for sure,

We could make him club ambassador to Beijing.

I played against him a couple of times when I was a kid, a brick wall that was impossible to get by.

He liked a pint rather more than he should have as a professional sportsman. But he was a good lad and I voted for him for player of the year once or twice.

I'd like to know who is not just lampooning him, but doing it so frequently in the last 8 months since IWH2012 has been registered for it to be considered "often". And credit? PotY 4 times in a row and I believe we mirrored that in a ridiculously one sided vote all four years.

You have created a fictional villain for us all to come out in defence of Dunne over, he is held in universal esteem here(with the possible exception of Carl, but he's a centrehalf, Carl's mortal enemy) and this is a bullshit thread with a made up premise from a forum troll.

Interesting that, for a brief time, KK played him at right back.

Probably a little more to his game than he gets credit for.

Not sure what a forum troll is, but I was looking for a word other than 'ridiculed', when I chose 'lampooned', as I thought it a bit strong for what I would regard as throw away remarks about him. I have only been on here 8 months as you point out, but I've been reading here for a lot longer. There were a lot of conversations about him not being good enough for City at the time of his departure, so I was just wondering what the over riding memory of him is. I'm well aware that he got player of the year 4 years in a row, when we were not quite as good as we are now.
If this has got your back up Slim, I'm sorry, carry on talking about whatever else there is to talk about, in the countless other threads that aren't bullshit.

Well to say he wasn't good enough for us when he left (which by that point, was true) is slightly different to lampooning him

I can see where Iwasthere is coming from. More often than not when Dunne has been mentioned on here since he departed there have been remarks about his own goals. I get that it's just humour but it often feels like that's City fans abiding memory of him.

And I agree Wooders, the Dunney/Distin partnership was as good as it gets, the perfect blend for a centre back pairing in my view.

He got a great reception in the recent game against QPR. He was a top centre back for me and was really quick for his size.
I think it's a legit thread though. I was at PNE the day KK dropped him for turning up pissed and we lost to Macken's 40 yarder. Plenty people pissed off that day.

I accept lampoon isn't the appropriate word either, but FIBD has probably summed up best, my memory of things. I do think there has always been genuine affection for him, but that's easy for me on this side of the Irish Sea. Was just wondering what the majority opinion was.

Some great defending mixed with occasional comedy moments, surprisingly mobile for a big fellow, turned into a model professional after his dodgy spell, one if the key ayers in keeping us up under Pearce, and has never said any but good things about the club and fans since moving in. He'd be ideal behind the bar in East Level 2.
