Such a shame some legends are hated on. I thought Edge had left.
If Richard Dunne were Welsh none of the people accusing fellow Blues of "hating" him in this thread would be doing so.

In fairness, OD is saying he can't understand legends being 'hated' on. This suggests more than just Dunne in my book, though I could be wrong.
The only other reference to hate is from Ted who said he hated watching him at times, he didn't say he hated the guy. From what I know of posters on this thread, including myself there are only 4 Irish and none, if you accept my interpretation of OD's post, have suggested anyone hates Dunney. So if that's what you are getting at, then I think it is unfounded.
I started this and have stayed out of it since the first page. I think there is a fair cross section of opinions about him on here which is basically what I was looking to gauge.
Slim thought this was a bullshit thread at the start, but I think it has showed that Dunne is remembered fondly, but not without a critical eye. I think most of what has been said on here about him is true, faults and all, but how you take it or categorise it is perhaps different from person to person.
I used the word 'Lampooned' and apologised that it was probably not the appropriate word, and yet we still have an example in here of exactly the way I remember other conversations about him, where we joke about him not taking his chances in front of goal, by managing to clear a cross, or something like that. That's not a criticism of whoever said that either, it's just a bit of banter, but it would fit into my definition of lampooning.
For what it's worth 'Tokyo', I probably have green tinted glasses on when I think of Dunney. My fondness of him doesn't solely stem from that though.
I like the fact that he was a piss artist looking like he would let his privileged position as a footballer end nowhere, but KK gave him the second chance and he took it. He served City well in worse times than now and I would have loved for him to be there long enough to get a cup medal, but in my heart of hearts I knew he wasn't good enough for where we wanted to go. The league cup victory just came too late for the likes of Dunne and we had to upgrade.
I accept all of the criticism on here about him. They are all valid opinions and whereas I don't probably go along with the harshest of critics, I probably wouldn't praise him as lavishly as the best of memories on here either.
One thing I do agree with is, that his performance against Russia for Ireland was phenomenal. As has been said, 'backs to the wall', is when he was in his element.
Im_Spartacus wrote:He was a good player for where we were at the time, which is what some are seeming to forget.
Had his faults but made the best of the talent and physique he had. Paul Dickov was a shit player, but he gave his best for the shirt and you won't see many criticising him for running round looking angry, so I think the Dunne criticism is all a bit harsh.

If it wasn't for his heroics at times then we may not have still been in the Prem when HRH was on the hunt for a club.
I'm not saying he deserves hero worship or legendary status but he certainly deserves a lot more respect than you're giving him.

The bloke without whom we would never have been in this position, key to getting us out of the 3rd division; just 'runs around & looks angry' whilst a bloke who was directly involved in us losing quite a few of our best opportunities of winning a trophy by either getting sent off, or falling apart, is a legend. Basically for being a mid table player in a comfort zone for most of his career.
And when he eventually gets his big chance in a cup final for Villa ? Richard Dunne lost possession to Dimitar Berbatov, and when he attempted to repair his error he could only find Owen, who slipped a perfect finish past Villa keeper Brad Friedel. Same Berbatov against whom Dunne bottled it vs Spurs when they knocked us out of the cup. But who can forget his dominating performances v Robbie Keane, every year ?
I seem to remember Dickov coming back to City for Leicester & tearing our cbs a new arsehole as we disappointed yet again in a game we expected to win.
Dickov IS a legend, for actually achieving stuff which was above the norm, & making a positive difference to our history.
If Dunne had never been at the club, there would be no difference.

I'm certainly not calling Dunne a legend, I'm just saying he was a bang average player who was good for us on the whole, during the time he played for us. No more, no less. Dickov might have a place in our history for scoring a goal in a play off final, but he was also, like Dunne a bang average player who frequently was also completely ineffective for us.

What a load of shite. He's a fucking cb, match winners are hardly his forte.
Take dunne and distin out that team of 05ish and tell me we stay up? We all
Know the rest, survive, get bought, bought again and we're here. If Dicko getting us up is worth praise, how the fuck is dunne being major reason we stayed up not?
I'm not dunnes biggest fan, nor am I Irish, but some respect is certainly due. Take him out the team and you're damn right it would have made a difference.
